AWHONN Awarded Department Of Defense Contracts To Deploy Perinatal Training Tools

The Association of Women's Health, Obstetric, and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) is proud to announce the receipt of two major contract awards from the Department of Defense (DOD) Patient Safety Program, managed by TRICARE Management Activity (TMA). AWHONN will provide a web-based introductory Fetal Heart Monitoring course, as well as Neonatal and Perinatal Education programs to military health care personnel.

"AWHONN is honored to be selected to share its clinical expertise with military health care providers," said AWHONN Executive Director, Joseph C. Isaacs, CAE. "We appreciate DOD's recognition that Implementation of AWHONN's programs will enhance already existing orientation and training programs within the various services."

The AWHONN web-based Introduction to Fetal Heart Monitoring is the first component of the AWHONN Fetal Heart Monitoring (FHM) learning pathway. the AWHONN FHM Program has educated more than 100,000 heath care providers, including 200+ physicians since its inception in 1993.

The AWHONN Perinatal Orientation and Education Program (POEP) and Neonatal Orientation and Education Program (NOEP) are well-known for their evidence-based, expert-authored, comprehensive content. With this award, military health facilities will join the 600 hospitals currently using the programs, targeting new and experienced perinatal and neonatal health care providers.

"The Perinatal and Neonatal Education programs along with the web-based introductory Fetal Heart Monitoring course will support the Military Health System's goal of establishing a culture of patient safety and quality care within the Military Health System," said Heidi B. King, MS, Deputy Director, Department of Defense Patient Safety Program.
