AMA President, Dr Rosanna Capolingua, said today the AMA welcomes the opportunity to continue a productive relationship with Nicola Roxon following her appointment as Minister for Health and Ageing.
Dr Capolingua said Ms Roxon's knowledge of the health system and familiarity with the key organisations will allow her to get off to a flying start in the portfolio.
"The AMA did not always agree with the new Minister in her previous position as Shadow Minister, but we are keen to play a key role in the discussion and implementation of the new Government's health agenda," Dr Capolingua said.
"The AMA is ready to provide plenty of support and cooperation in the implementation of good health policy for Australia.
"In particular, the AMA will seek an active role in the National Health and Hospitals Reform Commission, which we expect to have public hospitals as a primary focus.
"We welcome Justine Elliot to the Ageing portfolio, and we are pleased that Senator Jan McLucas is Parliamentary Secretary for Health and Ageing following her strong contribution to the aged care sector as Shadow Ageing Minister.
"The AMA looks forward to meeting with both Ministers and the Parliamentary Secretary at the earliest opportunity," Dr Capolingua said.
