Australian Medical Students' Association Welcomes New Health Minister

The Australian Medical Students' Association (AMSA) welcomed the appointment of Nicola Roxon as Federal Minister for Health and Ageing.

AMSA President Mr. Rob Mitchell said, "I look forward to working with Ms. Roxon in her capacity as Health Minister.

"She has shown a strong commitment to the portfolio through her role as Shadow Minister for Health, and AMSA will continue to work towards the expansion of clinical training resources and the ongoing quality of medical education in Australia.

"AMSA applauds the Labor Government's pledge to increase the number of John Flynn Scholarships for medical students interested in rural and remote health.

"But more incentives and support are required for students and junior doctors in areas of workforce need," said Mr. Mitchell.

As the peak national body for medical students studying in Australia, AMSA will continue to work with the Department of Health and Ageing to ensure the training of our future doctors remains high on the agenda.

"With the number of medical graduates doubling in the next three to five years, it is critical that the Labor Government prioritises medical workforce planning and the expansion of clinical training environments.

"The delivery of high-quality patient care across all areas of Australia depends on this," said Mr. Mitchell.
