The American Pharmacists Association (APhA), the national professional society of pharmacists, has just published a collection of profiles on the professional lives of 28 American pharmacists who changed the profession. The essays in Heroes of Pharmacy: Professional Leadership in Times of Change span two centuries of progress in pharmacy education, community and institutional practice, pharmaceutical manufacturing, government affairs, publishing, association leadership, and military service.

"It is important for pharmacists to understand who the people described in Heroes of Pharmacy are and why they were able to have such a great influence on the evolving role of pharmacy in health care," wrote Lowell J. Anderson, DSc, 2004 Remington Honor Medalist, in the book's foreword. Among the historic figures profiled in the book are William Procter, Jr. (1817-1874), considered the father of American pharmacy; Joseph Price Remington (1847-1918), a great pharmacy teacher and role model for many future teachers; and Harvey A.K. Whitney (1894-1957), a hospital pharmacy pioneer. The essays were published originally in the Journal of the American Pharmacists Association in a series titled Heroes of Pharmacy, which began in APhA's sesquicentennial year, 2002.

Heroes of Pharmacy (ISBN 978-1-58212-111-6; hardbound; 236 pages; $35.00 [$31.50 for APhA members]) was written by Dennis B. Worthen, PhD, Lloyd Scholar at the Lloyd Library and Museum in Cincinnati, Ohio. The book may be ordered online (http://www.pharmacist.com/store) or by phone (800-878-0729).
