As the health care sector continues to search for ways to control expenses and improve patient quality-of-care, integrating the flow of patient information on a facility-wide basis has been viewed as the low-hanging fruit in a forest of opportunities. In this migration, extending integration beyond the wired hospital LAN via wirelessly enabled devices is the next frontier. Integration of point-of-care information onto health care information LANs using wireless devices is now viewed as a priority by an increasing number of health care administrators.
The availability of wireless patient monitors that can increase the efficiency of already-strained nursing staffs and improve outcomes is set to overcome connectivity and network scalability issues to become a standard operating scenario. The market potential for wireless monitors is rooted in a handful of standards that define the communications protocols, device interfaces, and information security requirements for health care information systems. These standards are fostering the introduction of new wirelessly enabled monitors, and serving as a roadmap for the integration of existing standalone monitors onto hospital LANs using third-party wireless modems and chipsets.
Interoperability will continue to be a key buying influence for the more than five thousand health care facilities currently attempting to integrate a variety of discrete monitors onto their networks. A recent survey by Applied Data Research indicates the convergence of key market and technology factors will fuel the growth of wirelessly enabled monitors, as the favorable impact of these products on health care operations by early adopters becomes known.
The survey's findings are contained in a recently published report, titled Wireless Patient Monitors: Markets & Opportunities.
