Feza Remzi, M.D. and Daniel Geisler, M.D., Surgeons at Cleveland Clinic and pioneers of a Single-Port Laparoscopic (SPL) method in the field of Colo-Rectal Surgery, recently performed the world's first colon resection (partial removal of the colon) entirely through a single incision in the navel.
The conventional laparoscopic approach to colon resection for polyp or cancer utilizes three to five abdominal wall incisions. The SPL trans-umbilical approach employed by Drs. Remzi and Geisler is a variant of the laparoscopic operation that uses only a single umbilical incision through which a single specially-designed port is placed. There is no utilization of any other accessory ports inside or outside the umbilicus.
The operation was enabled by Uni-X Single Port Laparoscopic System, a single multi-cannula laparoscopic port, and a variety of curved laparoscopic instruments.
