Democrats "deserve credit for scoring some impressive legislative victories" in the 2007 Congress -- "including the largest increase in funding for veterans, health care" and other areas -- "especially with a president who rarely lifted a finger in urging his Republican colleagues to buckle up and work with the new majority," Donna Brazile, a nationally syndicated columnist and political commentator, writes in a Washington Times opinion piece.
However, Congress and the White House "need to come together" to reach a compromise on legislation to reauthorize and expand SCHIP, as well as other important issues, Brazile writes. She adds, "Let's hope that children's health care will be among their top priorities upon their return to Capitol Hill after the holidays." Brazile concludes that Congress and the White House in 2008 need to be "prepared to actually make it a better legislative year than 2007" (Brazile, Washington Times, 1/7).
