Speaking Royal College of Nursing General Secretary Dr Peter Carter said;

"This announcement is good news for patients and is a recognition of the important role nurses play in tackling healthcare acquired infection. Specialist infection control nurses bring essential expertise to wards, help educate colleagues and improve patient care.

"However, we need to ensure that money allocated to infection control reaches the ward and is not diverted elsewhere in the system. Addressing problems like MRSA is a continual process where only by constantly investing in staff, cleaning and training will we be able to provide environments safe for patients."
