Research in Bulgaria has found that more than half of pregnant women in Bulgaria continue to smoke.
Although the pregnant women were aware of the harm inflicted on their child, 64 per cent failed to give up, with many claiming to cut down the number of cigarettes they smoke instead of completely stopping.
The research was carried out among female smokers between 22 and 53 years of age. Lack of will was the main factor that prevented pregnant women from giving up.
Despite not having been able to stop smoking during their pregnancy, 90 per cent of the women interviewed thought that Bulgaria should reduce smoking in public places.

Smoking In Bulgaria
posted by phyper1 on 14 Jan 2008 at 11:11 amI live in London and go to Bulgaria very often, not for just short visits but often for as long as 3 months at a time.
I love the Country, it's lovely mountains and the people. I love Stara Planina and the beautiful forests, woods and trees. I love the valley of the Roses and the wonderful colour of the leaves in Autumn. I am very happy when I am there and love the caffes and restaurants. But there is one repulsive item that puts me off when there. That is Smoking.
Very few places where one can escape the inconsiderate vile habit of people sitting at the table next to you, holding the cigarette in their hand AWAY from their faces but next to your nose, smothering you with smoke from all directions. When is the nation going to take stock of the habit. When is the Government going to help people by more awareness campaigns, to bring forth the damage smoking does to its people. Nobody seems seriously interested. I do not see any posters, or indeed any evidence coming from anybody that smoking is harmful. When is enough of the filthy habit going to be enough. Lets start from outside Bulgaria and I will not accept the ' who are you to tell us what to do'. Sorry people, but campaigns such as ' STOP SMOKING IT HARMS YOUR HEALTH' must start somewhere, all be it from abroad.
