The end of 2007 brought to a close RehabCare's "Year of Caring," a designation given in commemoration of the Company's 25th anniversary. Through company-sponsored events, employee donations, merchandise sales and raffles, RehabCare raised over $27,000 collectively for its four adopted charities: the American Heart Association, Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation, the American Cancer Society and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
David J. Totaro, Senior Vice President, and RehabCare's Charity Task Force Chairman, said the company adopted the four charities based on the results of a survey given to a cross section of RehabCare colleagues. "Our employees are the drivers of where our charitable contributions are focused. We planned a year that involved a variety of 'giving' activities based on the overwhelming appeal to devote both time and money to our selected charities."
To kick off the year, the company successfully raised $8,000 for the American Heart Association, an organization that RehabCare has been actively involved with for the last four years.
During the summer months, colleagues across the country formed teams and joined the fight against breast cancer. Local colleagues donated their time by manning a company sponsored water station at the Komen St. Louis Race for the Cure.
"Quilts for Charity" enlisted nationwide participation during the third quarter, with colleagues raising funds for the American Cancer Society and creating warm lap quilts for cancer patients currently undergoing treatment.
In the fourth quarter, RehabCare endorsed a nationwide campaign to donate airline miles to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, collectively contributing over 500,000 frequent flier miles. They wrapped up their milestone year by funding a trip to Disney World for their own wish child and his family.
2007 created a benchmark for future charitable efforts. "RehabCare's lend-a-hand spirit has grown significantly since our grassroots beginning," Totaro explained. "It is clear to us that 'giving back' is very important to our employees."
With more than 25 years experience, RehabCare is a leading provider of physical rehabilitation program management services in about 1,250 hospitals, nursing homes and other long-term care facilities throughout the United States.
