The Journal of Rehabilitation Research and Development (JRRD) has released a single-topic issue on traumatic brain injury (TBI) and polytrauma. This issue focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of TBI in military personnel returning from combat.
Based on recent studies of combat veterans, brain injury, acute stress disorder, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have been linked. In a review published in this special issue, researchers discuss the literature on PTSD and PTSD-like symptoms that can occur along with mild TBI and concussion.
In this article, researchers address four major areas: (1) clinical aspects of TBI and PTSD, including diagnostic criteria, incidence, predictive factors, and course; (2) biological interface between PTSD and TBI; (3) comorbidity between PTSD and other mental disorders that can occur after mild TBI; and (4) current treatments for PTSD, with specific considerations related to treatment for patients with mild TBI or concussive injuries.
A single-topic issue on PTSD is under development and slated for release in May 2008. Advance orders for the PTSD issue are being accepted.
