Two new clinical trials are underway to create new treatments for the thousands of Australians suffering from Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.
These trials start at the the same time as the Australian Crohn's and Colitis Association awareness week also commences.
Association chairman Professor Peter Gibson says there are 50,000 sufferers in the country.
"The problem is that only six out of 10 people with inflammatory bowel disease respond adequately to our current therapy," he said.
"So that what we then are left with is four out of 10 people who are not getting adequate relief.
"Many of these people will need to have surgery."
