In response to the Lancet article The Pill Gives Long-Lasting Protection Against Ovarian Cancer Julie Bentley, Chief Executive, fpa said:

"This is great news for women as it is further assurance that the contraceptive pill provides lasting protection against ovarian cancer. Research has shown time and again that the pill is not only an extremely safe and effective method of contraception but has health benefits other than protecting against unplanned pregnancy.

"There is now substantial evidence showing that for most women the benefits of taking the contraceptive pill are far greater than any of the risks. Though this research shows a short-lived increase in breast and cervical cancer more research needs to be done into other lifestyle factors such as smoking and diet."

fpa (Family Planning Association) is the only registered charity working to improve the sexual health and reproductive rights of all people throughout the UK.
