High profile medical experts representing the nation's top pain centers will come together to discuss the latest in pain research and treatment at the 24th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Pain Medicine (AAPM), February 12-16 at the Gaylord Palms in Kissimmee (Orlando), Florida.

In the last decade, a variety of new pain therapies have been introduced that can offer relief to millions who needlessly endure untreated or undertreated pain. This meeting promises to address new advances and directions in pain management.

Pain is vastly undertreated for a variety of reasons including misconceptions regarding addiction, lack of access to care, cultural norms, and physician concerns about prescribing pain medications for chronic pain. Millions of people suffer unnecessarily because of these barriers to effective pain treatment. Patients with acute pain or pain from cancer, AIDS, and other serious diseases can be treated appropriately.

The American Academy of Pain Medicine worked with the U.S. Congress to declare this the Decade of Pain Control and Research; worked with the Federation of State Medical Boards to create clinical guidelines for the appropriate use of opioid medications in treating pain; and has developed educational programs for physicians on pain assessment, opioid usage, detection of addiction, and prevention of diversion.

Founded in 1983, the American Academy of Pain Medicine (AAPM) has evolved as the primary membership organization for physicians specializing in Pain Medicine. As the practice of Pain Medicine has grown, a defined body of knowledge and scope of practice have emerged, and today, the American Medical Association (AMA) recognizes Pain Medicine as a discrete specialty.
