The New York Times and Chicago Tribune recently published an editorial and opinion piece, respectively, in response to a Guttmacher Institute report released earlier this month that found the U.S. abortion rate has reached its lowest level since 1974. The total number of abortions among women ages 15 to 44 decreased by 8% from 1.3 million in 2000 to 1.2 million in 2005, according to the report. It also found that the proportion of pregnancies ending in abortion declined from 24.5% in 2000 to 22.4% in 2005 -- a decrease from a high of 30.4% in 1983 -- and that about 90% of abortions occur in the first trimester (Daily Women's Health Policy Report, 1/17).
