UNISON Calls For Recruitment Drive for Homecare Workers In Light of Commission for Social Care Inspection Report
A report published by the CSCI states that elderly people in the UK are at the whim of a postcode lottery in terms of the care they receive in their old age. This increasingly leaves the elderly and disabled faced with two stark choices, to move, or to fund their own care.
UNISON National Secretary for Local Government, Heather Wakefield commented:
"The elderly and disabled are amongst the most vulnerable people in our community, It is shocking to think many will have to develop a life threatening condition before their local council will provide social care. This report highlights that those who need help with day to day tasks such as washing up or getting up in the morning may be denied care. This is a travesty, and will ultimately cost the council more money as they will have to fund full time care for those who will no longer be able to cope at home.
"It is clear to UNISON that homecare needs better funding, and local councils need to focus on recruiting staff. Boosting staff recruitment and retention in these very areas would cut down on long term costs and provide quality of care in the community."
