London's National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery has recently taken delivery of three large MRI magnets for machines from the Total Imaging Matrix (TIM™) family, as part of the ongoing project to complete the building of the hospital's new imaging centre.

The access road leading to the hospital required extensive adjustments to take the weight and size of the delivery. The road is built on top of an underground vault that has only been partially concreted, so its strength could not be determined. To solve this, Siemens worked with construction partners to construct a temporary new road from sand and steel. This was then used to support the heavy industrial cranes that were needed to lift the magnets into the hospital. Once constructed, the three magnets were manoeuvred into the imaging department in one day.

Gary Cook, London Sales Manager at Siemens states, "The delivery of large MRI magnets can sometimes present problems due to their weight and dimensions, especially to older hospital sites that have unknown groundwork or underground vaults. However, by working in partnership with hospital estate managers, construction companies and project managers all situations can be overcome. The end of an equipment sale is just the start of the delivery and installation process."

Further technology will be delivered to London's National Hospital new imaging department in due course. This includes a biplane neurology system, CT scanner and another MRI scanner.
