CMS on Tuesday released the complete list of U.S. nursing homes that failed to meet safety and quality standards for care, identifying 131 as deficient, CQ HealthBeat reports. The original list, released in November 2007, identified 54 facilities that were designated as "special focus facilities" that require additional oversight and stricter guidelines for improvement. The facilities also are granted additional time to comply with CMS standards or risk being banned from Medicare, Medicaid or both (Johnson, CQ HealthBeat, 2/12).
The list was presented by Acting CMS Administrator Kerry Weems and Senate Special Committee on Aging Chair Herb Kohl (D-Wis.). Kohl and Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) plan to introduce legislation on Thursday that would provide consumers with better access to accurate and complete information on nursing home quality (Dorschner, Miami Herald, 2/13).
The list is available online (.pdf).
