UroToday.com - In recent decades, therapeutic donor insemination (TDI) has become an increasingly obscure form of infertility treatment.

Nonetheless, TDI does still maintain a role in the urologist's armamentarium for treating male infertility. Although there are certain risks to TDI that should be discussed with patients, prevailing evidence has shown that it is a reasonably safe treatment option for producing offspring. In particular, it may be appropriate for couples with male factor infertility who have failed multiple cycles of in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and/or who are unable to afford the high expense of IVF/ICSI. For these couples and others affected by male infertility, Urologists should remember to offer TDI as a possible treatment option.

With a dearth of information on patients failing treatment with sperm retrieval and IVF/ICSI, further studies are needed to better elucidate their numbers and to examine their subsequent rates of success with TDI.
