In honor of National MS Education & Awareness Month(R), the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation (MSF) is now accepting nominations for the National MS Hero Awards. The grand prize winner will receive passage for two aboard the 2009 MSF Cruise for a Cause (airfare not included). Deadline for entries is March 31st, 2008.
Five winners will be selected in five categories, including a person diagnosed with MS; a person who cares for someone with MS; a family member or friend who helps someone with MS in any capacity who is not the primary caregiver; a person who takes personal or political action on behalf of a person(s) with MS; and a healthcare professional who serves individuals with MS. Prizes will be awarded in each category and winners will be featured in MSFocus, the national, quarterly publication of the MSF.
National MS Education and Awareness Month is a national campaign, spearheaded by the MSF and affiliated organizations to promote an understanding of the disease and provide education, empowerment, and assistance to those living with it.
MS is a chronic neurological disease that is currently without a cure. Two hundred people are diagnosed with MS every week and more than 2.5 million people are living with this disease worldwide.

MS Award Shortchanges Award Winners
posted by Jan Pottker on 26 Feb 2008 at 7:14 amI dislike being negative, but it is not really an award to make recipients pay for airfare themselves. Part of our MS education includes the knowledge that many people with MS or who care for those with MS cannot work full time, if at all. It is thoughtless to give them an award that they cannot benefit from because they cannot afford airfare.
Some recipients might have to make the choice between accepting the award and paying for airfare versus paying for their medications. Surely, the MS organization can find airlines to comp these airfares, or pay for them itself. Thank you.
