Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (R) on Tuesday pledged to remain in the presidential nomination race to advocate for a constitutional ban on abortion and ensure that the ban stays on the Republican Party's official platform, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports. "The human life amendment has been part of our party's platform" since 1980, Huckabee said at a news conference in Little Rock, Ark. "I want to make sure that it's still on that platform, because I believe it's one of the reasons we've attracted a lot of conservatives to our party," he said. Huckabee added, "We're going to keep marching on. Not just because of nothing else to do, but primarily because there's a message that still needs to be heard in this country."

Sen. John McCain (Ariz.), who also is running for the Republican nomination, opposes abortion rights but believes that it is a state issue, the Democrat-Gazette reports. According to the Democrat-Gazette, it is "not certain" that the Republican Party policy on abortion will change during the national convention. However, if antiabortion voters "continue to back Huckabee in strong enough numbers, it could provide insurance against the idea." McCain likely will get the required number of delegates to win the Republican presidential nomination on March 4, when four states hold primaries, the Democrat-Gazette reports (Cate, Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, 2/20).
