The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced the outcome of its investigative efforts by the Office of Criminal Investigations, conducted jointly with the United States Attorney's Office (USAO) for the Eastern District of New York and the New York Division of the United States Postal Inspection Service (USPIS), to bring to justice a businessman who had victimized cancer patients by heavily advertising and selling Laetrile, a highly toxic product that has not shown any effect on treating cancer.
Jason Vale, president of the New York-based Christian Brothers Contracting Corp., was sentenced on June 18, 2004 to 63 months in prison and 3 years of supervised release by a United States District Court in the Eastern District of New York.
"There is no scientific evidence that Laetrile offers anything but false hope to cancer patients, some of whom have used it instead of conventional treatment until it was too late for that treatment to be effective," said Dr. Lester M. Crawford, Acting FDA Commissioner. "This sentence sends a strong message that we will not tolerate marketing of bogus medicines."
Following the investigation by FDA, the USAO, and the USPIS, the U.S. District Court for Eastern District of New York placed Vale's illegal sales and promotion of Laetrile -- also known as amygdalin, "Vitamin B-17", or apricot pits -- under injunction in April 2000.
Defying the court order, Vale set up a shell corporation in Arizona, and continued to ship the product from the basement of his own home to customers passed on to him by his New York firm. For these activities, Vale was found guilty 11 months ago of three counts of criminal contempt, and ordered to be held without bail pending his sentencing.
Last week, the court also found that Vale, who had made at least $500,000 from his illegal sales of Laetrile, had committed fraud in his marketing of Laetrile. In addition, Vale defrauded the U.S. government by claiming that he qualified for Legal Aid. As a result, Vale was ordered to reimburse the government $31,000 for the costs of his appointed defense attorney.

shocking
posted by gee on 15 Feb 2011 at 9:19 amI am just in total shock. I cant believe Big Pharma in colusion with the FDA actually imprisoned this man for curing his cancer and setting others free of this dreaded disease albeit at a cost.
They are sending a message alright.!! And I get it perfectly
Creating believability
posted by david power on 4 Jan 2011 at 2:09 pmI'm thankful he was imprisoned, if it wasn't for that I actually would have thought he was a nutcase, but if enough people care enough to go after him that much he just may be on to something and I'm going to read up on it.
RE: CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY
posted by Steve on 12 Sep 2010 at 11:11 pmPeople are slowly strating to become aware of the crimes committed by big pharma against humanity; death for dollars!!
I worked in a med/mal law office as a paralegal for awhile, and the atrocities I would witness and read through were reprehensible and scarier than a Stephen King novel, so I began to research this entire issue more intensely.
It begins with the grocery chain rep going to offer a price to the farmer for his crop on a contract, but for the farmer to get that contract he must agree to allow the rep to "GENETICALLY ENHANCE" the crop (in reality, he is depleting the crop of vital nutrients, then we buy the food as consumers, end up needing medical care in the end, which allows big pharma to utilize their tradecraft through HELPING us treat the disease THAT they deceptively gave us through their relationship with the FDA and the crop purchase!! It's a circle of death that the FDA and Big Pharma control in unison.
Now the FDA is fighting hard to looby for laws making natural health food stores illegal, because they know that people are waking up and realizing that natural remedies ACTUALLY CURE THE DISEASES THAT THEY GIVE US, FOR THE SAKE OF MAKING PROFIT!!
Jason did the right thing, and he has my applause. Think about it; why is it that the U.S. is well known as the only nation with a cancer epidemic, why is it that people have to travel to other countries to get treated and come back cured, why is it that the Native Americans never had such issues with disease (herbal remedies), why is it that the natives of the Himalayas have never been known to have cancer for hundreds of years, AND why is it that when the sick came to Jesus for help, Jesus cured them naturally; NEVER referring them to Luke .. the physician at the time??
It must be satisfying for a trained physician to get that long sought degree just to become a puppet to a larger machine!!
PRESS
posted by donna on 25 Nov 2004 at 3:09 amI believe in the theory of B17 as a cure and prevention of cancer. I read World Without Cancer and was floored by these claims after my husband was diagnosed with cancer.
The drug companies are only interested in the almighty dollar. RE: VIOXX, BEXTRA ETC. I saw a 30 second newsbrief on fox news about Jason. I have wrote them and they never responded. Nothing was in the newspapers. I tried for so long to get info on him. I pray for his recovery because his tumour has grown because he is being denied his apricot seeds. What a travesty in a free country!
Biased press
posted by marlene.thompson on 21 Jul 2004 at 11:45 pmPress, like medical journals ,depend upon advertising revenue from drug companies, so will support their benefactors regardless of the truth. There is no such thing as a free press .
Where are the victims? Where is the Press?
posted by Owen Fonorow on 23 Jun 2004 at 1:33 pmI can understand the FDA and prosecutors slanting this story, but where is the integrity of the press? It is my understanding that no one ever filed a complaint against Mr. Vale. I wrote the judge asking for confirmation, without response. The only people (apparently) harmed by Mr. Vale's efforts work for pharmaceutical companies making millions from chemotherapy products.
