ASHP To Give Feedback On Proposed Rule For Medical Error Reporting System

ASHP will offer its perspectives on proposed regulations that will set up a framework to enable healthcare providers to voluntarily report medical errors and near misses.

The proposed regulation will implement the Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Act, legislation passed in 2005, that establishes a framework to report errors to new patient safety organizations (PSOs) confidentially and with protections from liability. The Society has long advocated for this type of voluntary reporting system as a strategy to improve patient safety and worked as part of the Patient Safety Coalition to urge lawmakers to develop the law.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) will hold a public audio conference to discuss the proposed regulation later this week. For more information, visit the HHS Web site. In its comments to the agency, ASHP will offer to serve as a resource to HHS as it develops the PSOs.
