NuvaRing

posted by Anon on 08 Aug 2006 at 11:16 am

I'm currently going through this very problem right now, and my obgyn has taken me off the pill and put me on Nuva Ring. I wanted to know if anyone else has tried / tested this and if it has had positive results?

Infection

I think that the nuva ring would cause you infection because it would be holding sperm and bacteria up inside you. I personally think that it would do you more harm than good.

Nuvaring Infection

I took mine out after the first day - immediate infection: a large amount of thick discharge and extreme itching took place overnight. Two days later, still itching. Unsanitary.

Itching, Spotting
posted by Anonny on 12 Oct 2006 at 6:40 am
I have been on the ring for 3 months. The frist month, I was not having intercourse and had no trouble. These past 2 months, I have had some intercourse early in the ring month, or mid-month. The day after or so, I start with a surface itching/burning and much discfomfort, coupled with a discharge that looks slightly bloody (a brownish color). Also, my partner feels the ring, so there is a good chance that the intercourse is causing some kind of rubbing, irritation. I am going to try taking it out during sex (but then putting it back after, since it can only be out 3 hours), and see if things get better.

I don't know about it being unsanitary. I think if that were the case, it probably wouldn't make it onto the market. I've been on it for about 3 months. I never feel it once it's placed inside. I have no mood swings or spot bleeding....my only complaint is that I occasionally get this itching. It's just inside the vagina so i can't use external itching creams to help. I'm waiting to see if it goes away with time. If you ended up trying NuvaRing, let us know if you have the same symptoms. Thanks.

NuvaRing Discomforts
posted by Theresa on 17 Oct 2006 at 11:25 am
I didn't have any problems for the first 2 days. Then I started noticing excess discharge in large quantities. It never had a foul smell, though. Then I started to get very dry around the vaginal area and had problems getting "wet." Now I've had it out for several days and I still have this HORRIBLE itching that when I itch it turns into a HORRIBLE burning. Has anyone else had any luck getting rid of this. I'm also noticing that the lower part of my vaging, kind of between my anus and vagina, is very thing and starting to rip during sex. I've been w/ my fiance for 4 years now and although he is bigger than normal I don't think that's what's causing it.

Same Problem

I have been on the nuvaring for a month and a half... I was getting so irritated after sex and I was walking around with this annoying itching inside my vagina. I just had to take out that stupid ring. I had almost immediate relief. I think I am going to go back to the pill

I started using the nuvaring 3 weeks ago and I started to feel irritated and it burnt. I thought I had a yeast infection and I got the cream and it made it a little worse. I dont know what I should do to help.

NuvaRing
posted by Tiff on 02 Feb 2007 at 10:41 am
I have used this type of birth control for a year and never had any trouble or discomfort. It has caused no emotional issues (a BIG problem with previous types of birth control) and worked great. No discomfort at all!!!

BUT, I did everything right this month and didn't have a period. Now I've been spotting very lightly for 2 weeks and I'm beginning to be a bit concerned. Any suggestions?

Fan Of Four Years
posted by Robin on 06 Feb 2007 at 2:57 pm
I have been on the Ring for four years now. The first month I had my period for an entire month until the Ring put me on a cycle. Now I don't have any PMS, cramps, my period is only 3 days long. I find it very convenient that I only have to think about it two times and month and if I don't want to get my period on an important day, I can just leave it in.

Perfect Birth Control
posted by Jaime on 07 Feb 2007 at 11:01 am
I used the ring for a year with no problems....well, the first month, I did experience some itching as described above, but I think that was just my body adjusting. It went away pretty quickly. The Nuva Ring has eliminated my cramps and mood swings, and my period went from a heavy 7 day to a light 3-4 day.

My husband and I decided to try for a baby, so I stopped using the ring. I got pregnant the next month! After I had my daughter, I went back on the ring....she's 7 months old now and I NEVER have any pregnancy scares like with the pill.

My advice is to wait out the initial irritation if you can, and you'll find you have a super convenient super easy super effective form of birth control!

I Really Like Nuvaring
posted by Claudia on 07 Feb 2007 at 3:40 pm
I started using nuvaring 4 years ago. I tried a few pills and had terrible mood swings and decided to switch to the ring. I haven't had any problems. Never had ab infection, and no itching. A few days every cycle i do feel like discharge is a bit heavyer but i dont know that that is unusual. For those who tried for just a brief period - maybe try it for a full cycle. i wont go back to the pill -- this is way easier.

Love The Ring
posted by Britt on 14 Feb 2007 at 12:04 pm
After 3 horrible months of different pills, I switched to the ring and I love it! I never feel it, my periods are a light 3 days, I experience very few symptoms - only vaginal dryness and weight gain but that's it! No depression, no anxiety, no crazy hormonal changes. I reccommend waiting at least 6 weeks to let it adjust. And p.s., I never feel it during sex; my husband rarely feels it so it doesn't bother him either.

Ring Free Sex
posted by Anon on 15 Feb 2007 at 10:42 am
I have only been using the ring one month. So far so good. I took it out and haven't gotten a period yet, but I think my body is adjusting. My boyfriend says he feels the ring though, a little bit. And it actually came out during sex. Does anybody remove their ring during sex. Is this allowed or encouraged. It sure would be nicer...

Can Tke It Out During Sex, But Put It Back Soon Afterq
posted by Anon on 15 Feb 2007 at 12:58 pm
Yeah you can take your ring out during intercourse as long as you put it back in within about 2 hours or so. I tried to Nuva ring and I had to stop because it was causing depression, but I have been battling with this for a few years now. But it made all my acne go away! So if you are not depressed, I would HIGHLY suggest it!

From Depo Provera To Nuva Ring
posted by Kimberlee on 16 Feb 2007 at 1:07 pm
I had a horrible time on the depo shot. Irregular periods, etc. But I've been on the ring for 2months. The 2nd week on the ring I had redness, irritation, and burning on the external part of my vagina. I used OTC cream and it subsided in 5 days.

I have not had that problem since. I have noticed increased discharge, but its not too bothersome. However, from reading the above comments I think I might take it out during sex if there is a chance of me having internal itching and irritation or worse and infection!! I'll make sure I reinsert it within that 3 hour window.

Ring
posted by Sarah on 17 Feb 2007 at 12:30 pm
Most women's breast size increases when they start any hormonal birth control. When I was on the patch I was almost a full cup size bigger but the patch isn't very safe it - delivers too much hormone. I just started the ring and I've had no adverse reactions.

Itching With The Nuva Ring
posted by Anon on 18 Feb 2007 at 7:45 am
I started noticing vaginal itching the very week I started the Nuva Ring. I thought I had a yeast infection because I had just finished up an antibiotic. I called my doctor and she gave me Diflucan. I tried 3 Diflucans and it never helped. Finally my doctor prescribed an intra-vaginal cream. I used it the same week I took the Nuva Ring out. It worked!

I used the Nuva Ring again the next cycle and was itch free for about 2 weeks. Then the itching started again! I asked my pharmacist and he said he had never heard that the Nuva Ring could cause itching or a yeast infection. I went on line and found out that's not true. I'm glad I'm not alone in this frustration! I'm also disappointed at the lack of information I've received from my health care professionals about the Nuva Ring. Overall, I think the Nuva Ring needs more research. I'm going back to the pill.

Nuvaring
posted by Erin on 19 Feb 2007 at 8:16 pm
I started using the ring about a year ago. I switched methods and now for the past 3 months I came back to the ring. However, before I had no types of irritation or soreness, but now I get sharp pains during and after sex. My boyfriend now is much much larger than anyone I have been with before. I was wondering if anyone else has this problem?

Breast Size
posted by Erin on 19 Feb 2007 at 8:24 pm
I'm 19 years old and at my 18th birthday I was a very small A cup. My breasts are very tender now and seem to be growing some. I thought I was done growing by the time I was 18, but I have been on the ring for about 2 years off and on and never until now have I experienced this. Not sure if its the ring or if its just my body.

Nuva Ring
posted by Amanda on 20 Feb 2007 at 4:35 pm
So I have been on Nuva Ring for almost 6 months now. The symptoms seemed to creep up on me. I have been feeling overly depressed with heavy crying spells. I also itch and thought it was an infection until I went to the doctor a few times, and they said I was normal.

I have also started gaining weight since being on the ring and I had been losing weight prior. I never thought to put the symptoms together with the birth control until my boyfreind pointed it out.

It's so frustrating because the pills and patch had worse symptoms, not to mention the memory issues of taking them. The ring is great. I just wish these symptoms didn't come with it. I just want to know if anyone else feeling as depressed for no reason with huge crying spells? And do these symptoms taper off, its been 6 months already?

Helped
posted by Anon on 25 Feb 2007 at 2:59 pm
I have been on the ring for about 2 weeks with no problems, but I just had many of the same yeast infection symptoms many of you spoke about. Itching, burning, discharge, etc. I just took the ring out, rinsed it off, and waited about a half hour and put it back in. I feel much better now. This is disturbing and uncomfortable though. I hope it doesn't continue. Please let me know of anything else that has helped somone.
