Side Effects Severe From Lyrica And Cymbalta

posted by Sharon Kaczorowskik on 26 Aug 2007 at 11:41 pm

I am on Lyrica (one week) and Cymbalta (about 6 months). Getting ready to switch back to Effexor, on which I had very little in the way of side effects. On Lyrica I gained 4 lbs in less than a week and cannot get it off. I had already gained weight (about 17 lbs in 2monthts) probably from Cymbalta, which neither reduced my pain levels nor helped my chronic genetic depression.

With Lyrica withdrawal I also had a very strong feeling that I was being watched (to the point of paranoia). The Lyrica also made me euphorica. When euphoric, I seriously overdid it...lots of housework, gardening, typing, Internet research, etc., which I am unable to perform without serious effects unless I monitor time on task and use various aids. Also over ate due to intense sugar cravings. After three days, I collapsed with a severe flare up of my fibromyalgia/chronic fatigue. Pain was exquisite, unable to sleep, cyring, whole shebang.

Will have a test of blood sugar this week, along with thyroid and cholesterol. This may be followed by the long verson of the fasting blood sugar test. The weight is a serious issue as I need knee replacements. Not only does it worsen my pain and the deterioration of my knee joints, it increases the pain in my feet. It could prevent me from getting the surgery.

Am replacing the Cymbalata with Effexor, but know i will have more withdrawal symptom from Cymbalta in process. Don't know what to do about the Lyrica. It has given me some pain relief, but not in the neuropathy in hands and fee. I have been diagnosed with full blown nueropathy in my feet. Not looking forward to that withdrawal! Fortunately, my dr has experience with Cymbalta withdrawal.

Have no diea what to do abourt the Lyrica. I would like to replace it wtih something, but it has severe side effects upon quitting. Interested in any suggestions anymone may have.

Am also interested in ideas pertaining to managing Lyrica side effects and effexor withdrawal. Do not know if their are medications that manage the symptoms. Do have list of a few meds that supposedly take the edge off.

The effort in recovering my history, both personal and historical, has been difficult (have information on the process from others who has been through this). This site has been very helpful. Drs have not as these drugs are relatively new.

Appreciate any advice, Sharon

Side Effects From Lyrica And Cymbalta
posted by Bette on 16 Apr 2008 at 5:32 pm
Have had chronic pain for almost a year and recently put on Cymbalta and Lyrica. I am on 2 months Lyrica and Dr is increasing dose because it seems to help but have had serious swelling of hands and feet. At first it was mild and occasional but with the increase to 200mg Lyrica for just 2 days, I woke up with left eye swollen shut, hands and feet VERY swollen. Anyone else experience anything like this?

Cymbalta

Hi Sharon, i am glad to hear you have a doctor who will help you with the Cymbalta withdrawal. My son was on Cymbalta for 6 weeks and he was having paranoid episodes within that short time he was on it. I wonder if it was the Cymbalta that was doing it to you, rather than the Lyrica....good luck!

Fasting Blood Sugar
posted by Rich Stachura on 26 Aug 2008 at 7:15 am
I'm 43 years old, very athletic and have been taking Lyrica 100 mgs twice a day and Tramadol (Ultraset) for 9 months due to 3 herniated discs. I had my blood sugar tested and the 1st test came back at 130 (Fasting). The 2nd time I stopped my meds on Friday and Saturday morning had my blood taken. My 2nd test came back 127 (Fasting). I find it odd that when I stopped my meds for only a few hours my blood sugar dropped. Anyone have any blood sugar experiances when taking Lyrica?

To Sharon: Re Lyrica
posted by Ligia Rosario on 27 Aug 2008 at 1:44 pm
Hello Sharon,

I'm not a doctor, but I do have a handful of friends that have switched from Lyrica to SEROQUEL, and say they are happy with the fact that they do not experience those side effects they experienced with Lyrica. They also reported experiencing weight gain with Lyrica. Now, (I don't know your dosage), they take 100mg of Seroquel a day and say the only thing they experience is a little sleepiness, but endurable even at work, with Seroquel.
I'm not sure if Seroquel is prescribed for exactly the same symptoms that Lyrica is prescribed for, but you might want to ask your doctor about this alternative.

I use 100mg of Seroquel, not daily, but on those days when I feel a lot of anxiety, stress, and depression, and I find that I relax a bit more and can continue working on Seroquel.

A dosage higher than 100mg makes me even more sleepy, so I only take higher doses at night if I feel that I'll experience insomnia because I'm thinking or worrying too much about things.

Hope this helps.

Li

Lyrica And Gabapentin Withdrawal
posted by Christine on 22 Sept 2008 at 8:28 am
Hi can somebody help me! 18 mths ago after a visit to the dentist I got pain numbness and tingling in one side of my face. 6 mths later I got vulvodynia with burning thighs. I eventually got seen by a neurologist. Had scans all normal. She said my nerves were oversensitised and gave me Gabapentin. took it for 2 months then got sick and stated missing dosages of that any my antidepressant. So came off Gabapentin. This resulted in and occipital nerve pain muscle weakness and a pressure in my head.

Got referred to a pain clinic who gave me Lyrica. Day after I started my legs burned tried it for 5 days and stopped. Then pain in my head shot down to shoulders and back. This is a burning pain and skin feels as if don't want anything to touch it. So I thought OK I'l have to go back on it. I'm now 3 wsks into the lyrica 25mg in the morning 50mg at night. It has got rid of some of the pain but not all but I notice everytime I up the dose I get more side effects and plateau out for a fews days then need to up the dose again. My neurologist says its not a high enough dose. But I think its giving me more problems than I need. Anyone got any annwers.

Fluid Retention While Using Lyrica
posted by Anon on 08 Oct 2009 at 5:07 pm
Lyrica and cymbalta is great for my fibromyalgia pain, but my legs and feet are retaining a lot of fluid. My doctor has given me lasix but it's not working. I wonder if I'm suffering renal failure? I hate lyrica side effect. Has anybody got a good relief for fibromyalgia other than lyrica. I can't bear to go back to that pain.

LYRICA AND SWELLING
posted by ncgranny on 12 Oct 2009 at 4:44 pm
I was on Lyrica for diabetic neuropathy. I had severe swelling of hands, legs, feet, eyelids, and lips. My doctor took me off and the swelling went away. Lyrica is not for everyone. Cymbalta was my next try and I experienced insomnia and profuse sweating until I just could not stand it anymore.

I went off Cymbalta cold turkey 3 weeks ago (after two years of 60 Mg) and now I am experiencing the swelling all over again. Doctor's appointment tomorrow. I don't know what we'll try this time for the neuropathy.

Hi, 130 is prob completly normal for you. You are 43 years old, and weight plays a significant role in bs. Im sorry to say but I can ony assume that you are not at a ideal weight if you have 3 h. discs. Also other mes can play a role in your bs. Everything about a person, lifestyle, weight, genetics, heredity, and also your race can alter your bs.
