So glad about article on optic nerve regeneration

posted by Steven Meehan on 06 Apr 2004 at 2:11 am

I am a 15 year old boy who had an accident on July 15, 2003. At an attempt to recover a 4 year old boys plane, I broke the branch and fell about 7-10 feet onto my left eye. I fractured the left orbit and it cut my optic nerve. Before the accident i was very athletic and I loved to surf at my beach. Now that it has been almost 10 month since the accident I have begun to compensate for my lose of vision. I am so happy that they are getting closer to a cure to optic nerve damage. Maybe I will be able to play sports and be a regular kid after all. If you find any research on a new cure for optic nerve damage, please contact me at passmeby25@netscape.net Thank You and have a nice night!

Hope
posted by anon on 20 Jan 2008 at 11:13 am
I am glad i have found this forum. I was born with optic nerve damage in my right eye. I have slight peripheral vision in it, but nothing that really benefits me. I don't recall ever being properly diagnosed with a condition, just that I have optic nerve damage that cannot be cured. The best description of my condition I have received was when I last visited the optician, when I was told the optic nerve was like a frayed wire with only a couple of strands connected properly.

For the past 23 years I have lived as normal a life as possible never once thinking that I would ever have full vision in both eyes. Now I have found this forum, I have a little hope that one day I may have the kind of vision that I had never dreamed possible. Although my condition is not as bad as some of the stories I have read on here, I feel my life has been largely affected. Everyday, I fear that I may have an accident and damage my good eye, leaving me blind. I love sports, but have been hampered by my lack of good sight. I have also lost alot of confidence as my bad eye is slowly moving out of line with my good eye (I assume due to the muscles around my bad eye weakening as I am so heavily reliant on my good eye).

For me a cure would be a miracle and improve my life tenfold. I can't imagine the enormity of what it would mean to someone who is fully blind to be able to see again or for the first time. It is mindblowing. Just that there is now hope gives us all something to cling on to. However, I worry that I and many others will raise hopes too high because a cure may never materialise for general use. Or if it does, it may not be for another century or more. Medical research is painfully slow (for good reason), and even if they think they may have perfected a cure and tested it, they will have to wait considerable time to analyse any possible side effects, this could be years or decades in itself.

Still, I don't want to seem too negative, as this is all new to me and they may actually be closer than I think. I'm not religious, but i do believe that positivity and determination can achieve incredible things, and when you combine this with some of the finest medical minds, we may just experience a true miracle in the next few years.

Received Spiritual Faith While Blind
posted by Amanda on 20 Jan 2008 at 9:35 pm
Hello everyone! My husband and I were very excited to find other people seeking the same information as us. My husband (21 at the time) had a motorcycle accident April 15, 2006 (we were married 9 months at the time of his accident). He broke every bone in his face, fractured his c1 and c7 vertebrates in his neck, fractured his shoulder and ankle, he also had emergency brain surgery due to a blood clot, and 6 and a half hours of facial reconstructive surgery that resulted in 65 screws and 12 plates in his face(God spared his life).

Unfortunately, this also resulted in total blindness. None of the doctors could not explain to us why he could not see. Finally, we found a wonderful eye specialist in Memphis, that explained to us that he was blind due to optic nerve injury. He was very active, he loved driving and riding his motorcycle and he was also an engineer. None of these things he can do now. But he has coped with the situation well and has found things to do in his time. He has became a preacher since the accident, he is awesome on the guitar and almost any other instrument, and he is planning on starting college in the fall.

He likes to say that he received his spiritual sight while blind. He says that God has opened up his eyes. We pray and have faith that God will heal him, it will just be in His time and not ours. We are interested in any cures for optic nerves and hopefully everyone will be cured in just a matter of time.

If anyone would like to contact us for any reason please feel free. My email address is aoprice21@tntech.edu

Have a great night and God Bless

optic atrophy - Progress
posted by Dom on 31 Jan 2008 at 7:37 pm
I'm 17 years old and will be 18 in May. I have optic atrophy in both eyes and am considered legally blind. I was diagnosed when I was 14 having vision problems since elementary school. All of my friends are getting their licenses right now and while I am grateful I have vision at all, it still kinda kills any positive out lock you can have when you miss out on just being able to drive your friends to a diner or taking a girl out on a date without her driving. I do plan on going to NYC after I graduate college for the wonderful public transportation system.

Luckily we live in an age were yesterday doesn't really mean anything. Medical science is constantly progressing and I have a feeling that I will have substantially better vision before I turn 30.

Hope everyone else best of luck with accommodating yourselves with whatever set backs you are given.

Believe
posted by Rose on 15 Feb 2008 at 9:25 am
I was very happy to come across this forum. When I read what Hope (posted 20th January, 2008) had to say, I was struck with our similar problem.

I have glaucoma and very little vision left in my left eye. I too rely on my right eye and also worry about the possibility of losing sight in that eye as well.

My heart goes out to those who are partially or completely blind and urge everyone to believe that scientists (through a higher power, I believe) will very soon discover a way to regenerate the optic nerve in humans
Never lose faith, hope and belief that a cure is close.

Perhaps Someone Can Learn From My Anecdotal And Cautionary Tale.
posted by Joseph on 02 Apr 2008 at 11:27 am
I have proven that it's indeed possible to partially regenerate the optic nerve, and restore sight. My mom (already diagnosed with glaucoma) had a retinal artery occlusion in her left eye that went unnoticed until it caused complete blindness within two weeks. After six months of supplementation, we were able to partially unblock the retinal artery and regenerate her optic nerve and completely restore her peripheral vision, and some of her central vision. She was able to see the first five lines on the eye chart, with a small blind spot in the middle. This was a miracle in itself. However, her retinal specialist never cautioned us how this still partially blocked artery could lead to wet macular degeneration.

Due to a lack of oxygen, these malformed and weak blood vessels eventually burst causing huge intraocular pressure, above 50mm Hg, and instant blindness again in the left eye. Four months after shunt surgery and supplementation, my mom is now able to identify blurry shapes and colors in the left eye, with only partial peripheral and central. The doctors feel her eye has completely stabilized, and have changed her diagnosis to retinal nerve atrophy. In her unaffected right eye, she has improved from 20/40 to 20/25 vision and no longer needs to use glaucoma medication. I pray that this progress continues. This time we have also used nattokinase, serrapeptase, and lumbrokinase to completely unblock the artery in her left eye (as demonstrated though ocular scans.) This is actually the accepted treatment in Japan.

Some of the supplements available today used by me... acetyl-l-carnitine-arginate or argino carn, high-dose methylcobalmin or vitamin B-12 (20mg,) inosine, forskolin, lithium orotate, mannose and other glyconutrients. Search on all of these items along with the phrase "nerve regeneration." Of course for general eye health: bilberry, lutein and zeaxanthin, and taurine are hugely important. Melatonin and vitamin C can act as a neuroprotective and help lower intraocular pressure. Some of the difficult to obtain substances being studied by medical science known to help regenerate the optic nerve: af-1, mdf-14, mcm, zymosan, decorin, chondroitinase ABC, oncomodulin, midkine, xylosyltransferase, aminoadipate. Some of these things assist in dissolving glial scar tissue which inhibits new nerve growth.

Also search on supplements that act as stem cell proliferators: vitamin D3, carnosine, blueberry extract, green tea extract, DHA, resveratrol, fucoidan when taken in combination. As for the ultimate stell cell proliferator take a look at acell.com. This is a powder made from pig bladder which stops scar tissue formation and allow regeneration of whole body parts using our own adult stem cells. Approved by the FDA for veterinary use, and currently in testing for human use... likely available by late 2008. I would imagine an eye drop or injectable solution could be made from this powder. There are also eye drops you can buy, or make oneself, using acetyl-l-carnosine, msm, forskolin, sodium ascorbate, as well DHA and taurine. It's also important to search and print out an on-line Amsler grid, to insure vision doesn't change in any unaffected eye. Good luck and keep hopeful.

Regeneration Or Repair Of Optic Nerves?
posted by Ross on 10 Apr 2008 at 12:24 pm
Hi everyone,
I just came across this board. I lost sight in both eyes (right eye is completely blind while the left is 80% blind) This has all occurred in the last year and a half. The specialists I have seen are not giving me any hope or treatment as they say there is none.

Is there anything today that can help regenerate or repair optic nerves? Is there anything to this oncomodulin therapy?

Thanks everyone!

Regeneration Of Nerve Tissue
posted by anaon on 20 Jun 2008 at 11:13 am
Lets get something straight. I am completely fed up with the nonsense that has gone on with the current administration (USA). This administration has sent men to fight in war. Many of these men are suffering terrible injuries to there spinal columns, optic nerves and other areas ot their bodies. Stem cell research is an area that may one day lead to cures for some of these terrible injuries not to mention that possible benefits to the population in general.

For this president to say I support the troops but then veto the stem research bill shows what a callous disregard he has for those who have been wounded. It is a shame that this president has decided to allow the christian coalition to dictate the such a vital public health issue as stem cell research. I for one do not know if stem cell research is the answer to regenerating nerve cells.

But I do know that valuable time has been wasted by vetoing this important bill. Luckily both of the current candidates running for president have said that they would support this bill. But this is to important to wait nine months for. If the president had any guts he would immediately sign this bill.

Optic Nerve Damage

My son is 17 years old and recently had a car accident in which he broke all the bones in his face and damaged the optic nerve in his left eye. He underwent a 13 hour surgery to reconstruct his face but the doctors say he will not be able to see out of his left eye. Does anyone know of any new research or websites that I can check out so I can get more info?? It has been only two weeks since the accident and it has been difficult trying to find information about optic nerve injuries until I came across this forum. If anyone has any information, please e-mail me at dea314 (at) msn.com.

United States Optic Nerve Information
posted by LuAnn on 17 Oct 2008 at 4:18 pm
Hello All,

I posted a post over a year ago regarding my brother who is blind due to Optic Nerve damage. Within that time I have researched so much. I have been in touch with Chinastemcell research and I am in the process of sending requested medical for my brother. However in the process of having medical testing I was told about a medical team out of Albany Medical Center in Albany ny and was told to see a Doctor Stern and his wife Sally Temple..So I went with my brother...I must say I was shocked to learn of the research by this team in StemCell progress in our own back yard U.S.

The information that was explained to me in the doctors office was beyond words to express. I have searched for the last seven years never giving up hope even when the medical doors were shut with no hope. I am telling all who views this post help is on it's way. In the United States we are moving forward and I feel soon we will restore vision for so many. Please go to Google and type in isscr.

Again just type in isscr that is the website to begin to follow the research. I will keep this site update as we begin our path. I am in the process of sending ChinaStemCell Optic photos and a VEP test to a Dr West who is handling the China U.S. link. I will let you know how that goes. I will let you know the results of the Albany NY team heading the research we are a part of.

At this point I am looking into both to see who has the best to offer with the information to move forward. I have met the Doctors myself face to face and I want to say...Please don't give up hope. I am willing to keep the information updated. One of the Doctors said to me...If I could only give you a 10% chance of success would you be willing to move forward with your brother for research testing. I asked him to close his eyes for a moment...and said...What chance or percent would you take. He responded Understood !...
