Not Exactly The Best Test Subjects - bodybuilders, steroids and kidney damage

posted by Rob on 06 Nov 2009 at 2:03 pm

In this post there are a few factors that may need to be considered before you can say for sure that steroids damage the kidneys. The test subjects, bodybuilders may not be the best subjects to test this theory. Why? because not all bodybuilders use the same drugs, doses or methods for administering the steriods.

The amount of food that most bodybuilders consume is far more than 2,000 calories a day. Most bodybuilders eat 6 to 7 meals a day along with meal replacement shakes and bars. having your system constantly working like that can cause stress on the kidneys. Also bodybuilders take numerous pills and vitamins to counter act the side effects of steriods which can also have adverse effects on the kidneys.

Finally, some bodybuilders use oral steriods and some use injectable steriods while other will use both. The effect on the kidneys for oral steriods is far greater that of injectables. The combination of all these things along with extreme weight gain during the off-season and extreme dieting before contests will also contribute to kidney stress. Bodybuilders as the test subjects would only muddy the waters of the test performed. The test would need to be used on a control group other than bodybuilder to have a legimit outcome. There are to many variables for kidney damage in bodybuilders for the test to show with any rate of error that the damage was from steriods alone.
