levaquin side effects
posted by Helen 'Cenzi on 23 Aug 2005 at 2:40 pmYou list the two most common side effects for levaquin as being diarreaha and nausea. The horrible side effects of this drug are tendon damage (irreversible) cns damage, hearing loss, psychotic episodes, etc, etc. This is dangerous medicine to thousands of people and I like many others wasn't properly warned. My life has been ruined by this medicine along with thousands of others. Please check into http://www.fqresearch.org.

| Levaquin and knee pain |
| posted by Kenny on 25 Jun 2006 at 12:09 pm |
| I was taking Levaquin for the flu. After 3 days, I was unable to get my feet warm. Then the pain started in one foot and then moved to the other. It was unbearable! I thought that it was from exercising. I continued taking levaquin along with ibuprophen for the pain. The pain stopped in my feet and moved to my knees. I looked up Levaquin on the internet and found the bad side effects, which wasn't with the brochure from the pharmacy. I called the pharmacy and asked about the side effects and was told there wasn't any. They acted as if I was crazy. I quit taking the levaquin. This was two months ago and I still have the pain in both knees. I have made two more trips to the ER and was told that I have gout. (yeah, right)! I wish I knew how to make the pain go away. |

| I was suffering from bronchitis and my family practice physician prescribed Levaquin. After 4 days my Achilles tendons became very painful. I reported this condition and my Dr. informed me that Levaquin was the cause and to take no more. That occured early in March 2006. The tendons are still painful when I walk after almost four months. |

They basically told me I was nuts. I can barely walk on my own. I have not taken the med for 5 days and I am still suffering. My legs are feeling up with water. My stomach is painful to touch. This drug needs to be taken off the market. My own Dr,. thinks I am over reacting but I know how I feel my whole body has shut down. I can barely care for my 7 year old. HELP!!!!!!!! |

I have taken levaquin on two occasions. The first time I took it I thought that, because I was sick with sinus infection, I must have slept in some very awkward positions as I felt as though I had sprained both my ankles and both my knees. I also had tingling in both legs. I kept making excuses for these symptoms since I could not imagine that an antibiotic could be the cause.
Ever since then , my knees have been tender, and execising has been difficult. I never really made the connection between this pain and levaquin until it was prescribed to me again and I realized that once again I was waking up after taking my 'meds' and feeling like I tumbled down a cliff. Again my ankles and knees and hips felt sore and 'sprained'. Since this never happened when I was not on 'antibiotics' I finally made the connection. The 'antibiotics' did not cure my infection. All they did was poison me. I found this and many other sites on the web that confirm my reaction is not rare. NOTE: when I did a search in a doctors web site, they did not list any of these side effects. In fact there was only one article that even mentioned tendons and it referenced a study that concluded there is no risk of tendon damage. None of the other adverse effects I see patients are suffering from were even discussed. |

Also could NOT sleeo. I have been off Leviquin now for 10 days, and am returning to work today and I am worried about doing my job since I use ny hands all day. Pain is a LITTLE bette each day, but I still have trouble walking. Now I noticed a painful bump on my left wrist on the back of my hand, and am wondering if that is something else caused from Leviquin. I will never take it again, Yes, it is POISEN |

So far no side affects i'm going to stop taking this drug & already phoned my doctor about it. I am going to ask him if I really do need to take it along with the other antiboditic he prescribed for my minor(?) uti. This drug really sounds dangerous with all of the ill side effects. |

| Took levaquin for 7 days for diverticulitis. On day 6 had weird burning pain in left hip which was short lived, a few hours. One week later got same pain in both hips for over 24 hours. Pain returned on both sides 2 days latr and has not gone away since. Both pharmacist and doctor say it is out of my systm and couldn't be causing the problem. I am a very healthy active 44 year old with no other history of medical problems besides a hiatal hernia. I have never felt anything like this and can't believe that it is not related to the medication. I am currently taking enteric coated napsosyn(an antiinflamatory for the inflamation in my hip joints. The doctor prescribed this after pushing on my hip joints and seeing me jump up on the table because it hurt so bad. I have taken the naprosyn for three days but am not seeing any relief yet. If anyone knows of anything for the joint pain please let me know. Also if any doctor or researcher knows what this stuff is doing to our joints that would be great then maybe we could fix it. Good luck to everyone else who is suffering with this horrible drug. Thank you. |

Does anyone know of a natural approach to healing tendon damage? Herbs? Thanks in advance for any light you can shed on how to heal tendons. |

| A few months ago my dermatologist prescibed me 500 mg of levaquin for 10 days for folliculitus. I had no trouble with the medication at all. When it was out of my system, the folliculitus came back and so he prescribed me 1000 mg a day for two weeks and then 500 mg for another two after that. By week three, I realized that I had no strength in my hands, legs, arms..all over. The doctor told me to stop taking the medication and that I should start to feel better in a few days. It's been a week and two days since I last took it and have been in bed for the most part. Just when I started feeling a little better I woke up yesterday with a headache and mucle pain from the back of my head to the lower of my back on the left side. My ear hurts and I have been having muscle spasms all over my back. My knee joints are stiff and weak and I don't feel as if I am getting any better. Does anyone have any advice? I was contemplating some type of wholistic medicine, since I don't want to take pills ever again. I'm scared because I feel like I'm on a downward spiral and I'm only 25. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. :) |
| It's Not The Levaquin.... |

| I began taking Levaquin for a bone infection in May 2006. Other than diarrhea, nausea and oral thrush, I was tolerating it quite well. In late June, I began to have an insideous onset of joint and tendon pain. I first felt it in my hips and elbows, but it quickly moved to my shoulders, knees and my hands. When I called to report this to my doctor and pharmacist I was told that "it's not the Levaquin". Because of the seriousness of the infection, I continued the Levaquin for another week. I began waking up in the middle of the night with my knees and hips feeling like they were on fire. I dreaded getting out of bed because it hurt so much to walk around. My hands were swollen and I could no longer do normal things without sidnificant pain. I should mention that I am a healthy 40 year old woman. My infection occurred due to pins used to repair a fractured bone. Furthermore, I had taken Levaquin in the past for a UTI and had no problems; so I was not expecting any trouble this time. Finally, I refused to continue this drug and went back to an IV drug instead. I took my last dose of Levaquin two weeks ago and I am still in pain. I don't feel like my shoulders and hands will ever be the same. I am taking narcotic pain relievers every day just to function. Anti-inflammatories just don't give adequate pain relief. Does anybody out there have any insight into how long it may take to recover from this, or when the symptoms may subside? |
| Levaquin - Take It Off The Market |

Hi All,
I was prescribed Levaquin for a sinus infection and swollen glands. The night I took the Levaquin my throat and chest felt a bit tight yet I thought that was from the infection. The tightness dissapated within an hour. I could not fall asleep that night and went to work on 4 hours sleep. Day one after taking the Levaquin, I found my knees were hurting to walk and as such I was walking strange. Day 2 on Levaquin, same reactions yet the pain was now through my legs. Once again, thinking the meds were doing their job and this was what I was feeling from it. By the time I reached Day 6 I was walking as though I was an elderly person and struggling to climb stairs from the body pain throughout. It was at this point, I researched Levaquin for side affects and found I am suffering from same. I immediately stopped the taking Levaquin. I thought the pain was subsiding somewhat until I tried to run through the rain to get to my car and found the spasms in my legs and feet were so bad I nearly fell. This is a very bad drug to prescribe. I have an appointment with a Rhumatologist because of it and only hope this pain subsides soon. The drug should come off the market!! |

I acutally researched this for info today after taking this last night. Im taking somethig else with it for some type of inflamation in my colon I may not even need it- the dr. says until all test results come back, taking this "cant hurt".
I was worried because he said NO alcohol with this, and I had some this weekend before starting the medicine-that's why I initially looked up this info. I dont think I will be taking any more. Any info on stopping this so soon and being Okay (avoiding the side effects)???? |

I had a Kidney infection, and was put in the hospital for 4 days, my doctor had gave me this medication. At first it seem to have just gave me strange dreams, then on the third day of takeing this med. I woke up about 4 in the morning and had horrible stomach pain and was in the bathroom for over 20 minutes. I told my doctor about it and yet he still told me that it was fine and he sent me home.
The very next day I woke up again with the same horrible pain and felt like dieing. I was stuck in the bathroom for about 5 hours on and off just that morning. It has now been 4 days sence I got out of hospital and I am still suffering from this pain in my stomach. I just wasnt every one to know that this LEVAQUIN everyone thinks is so great.....IT"S NOT!!! I will never again take this med. my stomach hurts worse than my kidney ever did. Special thanks to my doctor and the nurses for sending me home feeling soooooo good.... |

I have an ear infection that will not go away, and I am on my third round of antibiotics - the last two have been Levaquin. I am scared after reading all of this! The reason I started researching is because my feet, ankles, and hips are so sore it is starting to become a little more than just bothersome - today it was almost unbearable.
I have also noticed the sleeplessness and pain in my back, which I thought was from lack of excersise. I was just commenting to my boyfriend the other day that I have been feeling anxious, and noticed my heart racing sometimes for no reason - but I didn't attribute that to Levaquin until now. I am going to finish the dosage and speak to my doctor, and will post here if anything changes or if I experience any other problems. Thanks to everyone who posts here - it is so comforting to know that you aren't insane, though I am deeply sorry for these horrible side-effects that many of you have experienced. |

I (61 yr male) was on a 10 day course of Levaquin (750 mg) in mid-June to treat cellulitis in my left hand. In late July, I suffered a rupture of my left distal (lower) biceps tendon. Coincidence or not, I'm very concerned. And how does one convince the insurance company, the two events are likely related?
Thanks, Bill |

| I'm sorry about your levaquin reaction. It has been almost two years since my last dose and I still have symptoms. However, they do improve in time. Time is your best cure. Sometimes you will find that hard to believe, but it is true. I have detoxed, tried every kind of herb possible and I can't say anything has really helped. I even had new symptoms appear months after the last dose. Good luck - time will be your friend and certain symptoms in time will decrease in intensity. |

After a 1 week course of Levaquin I began having mouth pain; thought I had bitten my tongue in my sleep. After several days of pain, examined my mouth with a flash light and saw many bright white spots under tongue and floor of mouth.
My doc could not see me right away, but urgent care said I definitely had thrush, either due to a steroid inhaler or Levaquin prescribed for bronchitis. Now on fluconazole for this and hoping it clears up. I also thought I was "nuts", pharmacist said never heard of thrush from Levaquin. Go figure! Suffering in silence, glad I'm not "nuts" and thanks for this site. |

I cannot believe the joint pain I am experiencing. I feel like an old lady trying to walk from point A to point B with this knee and foot pain. As I sit here now, my right foot is throbbing so badly.
I was given Levaquin by IV in the hospital and given tablets to take at home...this was October 2005, and my symptoms are ongoing. I haven't been able to exercise, even swim, because of the pain and limited movement. I also have a hard time sleeping at night...just every daily routine thing has been altered. I cannot even get up easily from a lowered position without excrutiating pain. This is a miserable drug - WHEN is the lawsuit coming?? |

After a 1 week course of Levaquin I began having mouth pain also. I too thought I had bitten my tongue in my sleep. After several days of pain, I examined my mouth and saw many bright white spots under tongue and floor of mouth along with what looked to be sores on my tongue.
My doc said it was just a few mouth ulcers and did not relate it to taking Levaquin. He said the ulcers would just have to go away in a few days on their own time. Now on fluconazole for this and a yeast infection and hoping it clears up. |
