levaquin side effects

posted by Helen 'Cenzi on 23 Aug 2005 at 2:40 pm

You list the two most common side effects for levaquin as being diarreaha and nausea. The horrible side effects of this drug are tendon damage (irreversible) cns damage, hearing loss, psychotic episodes, etc, etc. This is dangerous medicine to thousands of people and I like many others wasn't properly warned. My life has been ruined by this medicine along with thousands of others. Please check into http://www.fqresearch.org.

Use Nystatin For Yeast
posted by Tara on 03 Sept 2006 at 9:36 pm
I would recomment Nystatin for yeast infections--it's much easier on the liver than fluconzole (I may be spelling that wrong--), and nystatin doesn't interefer with as many medications--

Levaquin - My Cure For Side Effects
posted by anon on 09 Sept 2006 at 10:44 am
I was on Levaquin 500mg for 14 days for mastoiditis. During that time, I got achy joints and my muscles lost their elasticity to the point where I couldn't walk and was in considerable pain. After the course of treatment, the side effects did not go away (as my doctor had promised). Here's what I did to make the side effects go away: I took a vitamin combination. 1 B complex with C, 1 B6, 2 pantothentic acid pills, 1 potassium, 1 magnesium and 1 calcium. I got the vitamins at the grocery store with the exception of the pantothentic acid which I got at a health food store. I took this combination of pills three times a day until the side effects stopped (it took two days). Levaquin monkeys with your magnesium uptake, but you shouldn't take magnesium by itself of it will cause side effects of its own. Magnesium is responsible for muscle elasticity. Do not take this combination of vitamins within 2 hours of taking the levaquin if you are still on it.

I Feel Better
posted by Nanci on 21 Sept 2006 at 8:46 am
When I last posted here, I felt pretty miserable. My joints hurt so badly I wondered if I would feel that way forever. Very scary.
I began to try to sweat, however I could, hot baths with epsom salts, lying in the sun, etc, to flush this junk out of me. i also took magnesium and ate and drank more calcium enriched things. My joints feel okay now, and that nervous feeling has also diminished. I don't know if it was the sweating, the vitamins, the passing of time, or all of the above that helped, but I do feel better and wanted to let you know there is hope. I plan to continue hot baths and then saunas and steams at least 3 times a week.

Levaquin Side Effects
posted by Dolores Wallgren on 26 Sept 2006 at 9:47 am
I was given Levaquin for a sinus infection. One week later I began to suffer severe pain in my left back shoulder and my arm. Went to emergency room, fearing heart attack. Ekg and chest x-rays proved not a heart attack. MD diagnosis Myositis and myalgia. Pain meds given. I am suffering exquisite pain. Cannot reach up with right arm and still have pain in that area.

I am sure that the root of the problem is Levaquin. Dose given 750 mgs. two days 500 mgms 5 days

Levaquin Nightmare
posted by Dory on 26 Sept 2006 at 11:17 pm
In early August 2006, I was hospitalized for a bacterial infection in blood. I was on Levaquin intravenously for ten days.

Soon after discharge, I began an acute oral thrush and a systemic candida problem. To this day, after various long treatments with anti-fungal meds and I still have the very nasty oral thrush. It burns, stings, feels like a swamp in my mouth and sometimes, there's a horrid metallic taste. I have lost all hope....Has anyone experienced this?

Levaquin?
posted by Marie on 27 Sept 2006 at 6:47 am
I was told I had UTI and then bladder infection since I didnt take the Cipro. At the hospital they gave me Levaquin and morphene in an I.V because my back was hurting so bad. Now, the only side effects for me so far are headache, feeling sleepy and some muscle pain and chest pains that come and go.

Now I am suposed to fill a prescription for levaquin for another 7 days and after reading this I am scared too. Is there a safer antibiotic for UTI or bladder infection? I am allergic to penicillin.

Levaquin - Lucky To Be Alive
posted by Evelyn Wheeler on 30 Sept 2006 at 4:29 pm
On 01/04/06, I was administered Levaquin (10 capsx10 days) in treatment of pneumonia. Expected possible side-effects included blood sugar imbalance -- Grossly under stated -- since It took two full months for its return to normal. I experienced on-going head ringing/ pressure until exactly three months later (04/04/06) when I was hospitalized with a stroke. Ringing/pressure in head disappeared by the time I was released. I repeat, I AM LUCKY TO BE ALIVE... I can live with the results! But never again will a take such a drug or any other.

Levaquin - Near Faint With Fast Heart Rate!
posted by Tired Momma on 05 Oct 2006 at 9:16 pm
On the first day of Levaquin 750 mg I felt so tired with muscle aches, On the second day within 30 minutes of my second dose I felt near faint and had a heart rate of 150. This sent me to the ER. EKG was normal as my heart had slowed down, by the time I left the ER my heart rate was in the 50's. This is day 3 for me and I still feel very tired. All of this for a sinus infection....I will not take this medicine again! This was by far the scariest experience I have ever had.

Levaquin And Pain In Fingers
posted by MJ on 07 Oct 2006 at 8:21 pm
In March 06 I was given Levaquin by IV while hospitalized for supposed cystitis and blood infection. My fingers on my left hand have become stiff and have hurt me ever since then and now the ones on my right hand are beginning to hurt me. I am convinced that the Levaquin is the cause.

I also had a treadmill stress test a week after my hospitalization and my EKG showed that I had developed PVC's in couplets, which I have never had in any other previous stress test, which I have had every year. I know in my heart of hearts that the Levaquin is the toxin that has caused all these problems, but my doctor would never agree.

I am hoping that there will be a class action suit and I would be interested in being a part of one.

Levaquin Killed My Sister
posted by Deana on 07 Oct 2006 at 10:35 pm
My sister (32yrs old) was seen at an urgent care center for a skin infection on her leg on 6/25/06. She was given levaquin 500mg for 14 days. On 6/27/06 she returned for a follow up were she was given an injection of Rocephin. She stayed home from work the following day 6/28/06 complaining of a headache. When her husband returned from work around 4:00 pm he found her face down, in the living room, dead. She had a history of siezures. In researching Levaquin, I have read that extream caution should be used with those with known CNS disorders (siezures). Levaquin lowers the siezure thresholed. No more caution was used than would be with baby asprin! Levaquin was the Dr's first choice not his last resort.
If I can read this information in the drugs prescribing info and understand it, Why oh Why do the Dr's not know this stuff? If anyone has a CNS disorder or think they may have experienced any type of siezure of convoltion DO NOT TAKE LEVAQUIN. For my sister this info is to late but I hope its not for anyone else.

I'm still suffering the effects of this poison after 2 years. Tell everyone you know not to take any fluoroquinolones; avelox, cipro, levaquin, tequin etc. It should be taken off the market. Too bad the FDA works for the pharmaceutical companies

Misery Loves Company
posted by Anon on 17 Oct 2006 at 3:19 am
I am glad to see that I am not the only person having difficulty. After being perscribed Levaquin, I have also experienced weakness in my hands and leg, hallucinations (I saw two dogs--and I only have one; dancing lights on the ceiling, etc.). I have researched the effects of this drug and read a report from Canada. There were too many problems even within the study. The FDA has given in the drug manufacturers carte blanche. This drug is too toxic for too many individuals. With all the warnings of tendonitis, hallucinations, fever, breathing problems, gastro-intestinal problems, etc,.why was it ever introduced to the public? The FDA needs to remove this medication, as they have removed some other meds in the past. Too many people are reporting problems.

I suppose I am lucky. This is my first dose (definiately my last). I am allergic to Cipro (which is in the same drug class). I can't get answers as to why I was even perscribed this drug. I have spoken with another doctor tonight. If the symptoms persist another six hours, he wants to see me.
I have to admit, I feel worse than when I started. Got to run---literally!

Severe Anapylactic Reaction Within 5 Minutes To Levaquin 500mg
posted by Denise on 18 Oct 2006 at 12:54 pm
On Tuesday evening, October 10, I took one 500mg Levaquin tablet prescribed as the second antibiotic for a UTI. I had taken Macrobid for 4 days prior with no effect nor any side effects. Within 5 minutes of taking the Levaquin, I felt as though I hadn't swallowed it correctly - it felt like it was stuck in my throat. I was laying down with my child reading a book at the time, ran to the kitchen and noticed that the prescription had a note to "drink with lots of water". I thought maybe I hadn't used enough water so attempted to drink another glass while massaging my throat (thinking the medicine was stuck). My lips began to go numb and feel swollen and my face turned red. I could barely breath and started to do a cough (I found out later it was gasping). Thankfully, I was able to communicate to my husband that I must be having an allergic reaction to this Levaquin and got to the hospital within 15 minutes. It was the longest 15 minutes of my life. They gave me a bolus of Benedryl and some other medication for my stomach. 3 hours later I left with a new lease on life and a prescription for Prednisone and Bactrim (for the UTI). Now I was diagnosed with Oral Thrush (developed yesterday). Not sure if it was Levaquin or the Bactrim or the combination of three antiobiotics in a row. I still feel like I have the UTI. I have now been reading that there are many people who do not know they are severely allergic to Quinolone type antiobiotics and who can have a severe reaction after only 1 dose. I asked my dr. why he didn't prescribe Bactrim when I indicated that the Macrobid wasn't working and he told me because so many people are allergic to the Sulfides. I think Ortho-McNeil needs to re-evaluate this drug. Make sure you report all adverse reactions to the FDA and to the manufacture. My dr. claimed he was not required by law so I did it myself.

Class Action Suit?
posted by plrobles on 19 Oct 2006 at 8:22 pm
I've been on Levaquin for 20 days (2 doses) and am experiencing the muscle/joint pains too. As if I'd done an extreme workout. As well as pain or difficulty breathing as if a weight is on my chest. I was prescribed the antibiotic for infected stitches on my operated ankle. I thought the pain was the result of being laid up due to a broken ankle. Please let me know if there is a class action suit.

Levaquin
posted by Penny on 24 Oct 2006 at 9:00 am
I was given a dose of Levaquin by I V in the emergency room when I had a kidney stone attack along with a kidney infection. I was then sent home that same evening (Thursday) with a prescription of Levaquin to take for a week until they were gone.

On Saturday I wasn't feeling well and was starting to swell all over early Sunday morning I could barely walk and was unable to urinate and was having difficulty breathing so I went back to the emergency room. They took blood and catherized me, and also taught me how to catherize myself. I was then sent me home and told to continue to take the Levaquin and call my Primary Care Physician on Monday.

When Monday morning came around I was worse than I was on Sunday, I could no longer see my ankles or my knees, I was gasping for breath just trying to talk. When I saw my primary care physician he was extremely upset and told me to immediately to stop taking the Levaquin. When he got the blood work results back he found that the Levaquin was attacking my liver. My enzymes were off the scale. He said if I had continued the Levaquin I would have died. Needless to say I was off work for almost a month. I have never felt so bad in all of my life. It's been 6 months now and everything is back to normal. I will never take Levaquin again.

Levaquin - Just One Dose
posted by sahara on 26 Oct 2006 at 10:07 pm
I took levaquin quite a few years ago with no problem.
I went to my doctor today with a severe sinus infection and since i'm allergic to anything that ends in "mycin" like ethrymycin, and also sulfer drugs,he prescribed me levaquin..500mg once a day for 10 days.
Being a total pill phobic,i decided to look up the side effects of levaquin after experiencing abit of dry mouth the past few hours.
I've only taken one pill, but you people have totally freaked me out so i won't be taking another.
Going to call my doctor tomorrow and see what else there is that i might could take.
Thanks for the warning!

Pass Up The Levaquin
posted by Linda on 28 Oct 2006 at 7:16 am
My Doctor put me on a 10 day course of Levaquin (500mg) for bronchitis. My legs felt stiff during the first few days. I was having trouble sleeping and had nightmares 3 nights during the first 6 days. On the 6th day, my left foot got very numb. My right calf developed a stabbing pain in the tendon that was so severe I could barely walk. Going down stairs was almost impossible. I stopped talking Levaquin after that 6th day and have been limping ever since. It is now 6 days later and I still have pain in my right calf, although it has lessened. I'll never take this medication again and would recommend you think twice about taking it. At this point I am very concerned and am hoping my tendon damage is not permanent.

Levaquin and elbow pain
posted by janet on 29 Oct 2006 at 10:33 am
In March of 2006 my doctor prescribed Levaquin for me to treat what was thought to be a sinus infection or bronchitis. I took six days of the ten day prescription. I stopped because of pain in my elbows that I could not explain unless I blamed the Levaquin. I now know from doing my own research, that tendonitis is a "rare but severe" side effect of Levaquin. I have severe tendonitis in both of my elbows. It has been over seven months. I have had two rounds of cortisone shots in my elbows. I go in again this Friday because the pain is back. I am having pain in my right knee now that scares me because it is similar to my elbow pain. Will I be living with this forever? Does anyone know of a class action lawsuit I can join?

Cause A Diversion On Flight, levaquin
posted by Mary beth Miller on 07 Nov 2006 at 9:54 am
I was on my third week of taking levaquin for a very serious sinus infection. The entire time of taking I felt ill, and couldn't think strait, but no other antibiotics very killing the bacteria, and I had already been through two surguries.

I was dealing OK, with the mood swings and phycosis, but as a flight attendent working a flight from Hartford, I immediate collapse from the muscle tremors. I could stand, and had a possible seizure, the plane had to divert to another airport, to tranport to ER.

Of course the dose was much too high for my body weight. Use with caution and know you weight to milligrams,
