Lunesta's horrible taste
posted by R.Bashe on 13 Oct 2005 at 9:59 pm
I have tried lunesta for several nights, and the taste it left in my mouth was horrible. Everything I drank or ate tasted bitter.I have written to the pharmaceutical company about it, but just received their answer, which in a nutshell says " too bad, it doesn't work for everyone" I feel they should not have released this drug on the market, because there are hundreds of people who have written about that problem on this website. How many others did not write in their opinions?

| Lunesta Terrible Aftertaste-How Long!?!? |

I too made the mistake of taking Lunesta (3mg) for 5 consecutive nights. Although it worked ok, the horrible bitter taste it left in my mouth was too much to continue taking the drug. It has now been almost 3 weeks since I stopped taking Lunesta and my taste has still not returned to normal. Has anyone else had a similar experience after quiting Lunesta? How long did it take for your taste to return to normal? I'm getting quite concerned at this point. Thanks. | previous page | post followup | alert a moderator

the aftertaste is horrible.....just after first time, I though I was imagining it, but now that I have taken it for 3 non consecutive nights, it is still there - strong as ever. I am thinking about going back to the pharmacy and asking for my $ back ......has anyone tried that? | previous page | post followup | alert a moderator

Everything after I take Lunesta tastes like lunesta. Even the next morning. Only lunesta has worked for me. Ambien did not always put me to sleep and other sleep aids had worse side-effects.
I'd rather sleep regularly than have delicious food all the time.
Usually the taste goes away in the morning when I eat a little bit of food.
It's up to you, but so far it has worked the best for me even though it has the bad after taste.| previous page | post followup | alert a moderator

I tried Lunesta for about 3 or 4 nights, and the morning after taste was horrible...very bitter. I contacted the company and they said to try coffee, juice, food, etc. which of course, I did, but with no improvement. The bitter taste lasted the whole day, and each time I ate or drank something, it came back. Oh well...back to Ambien! | previous page | post followup | alert a moderator

I have been taking Lunesta for three months, which actually surprises me. After the first night I knew I'd never take another Lunesta. I couldn't bear the terrible taste. I gave it another shot because it cost too much money to just throw away and also because it did help me sleep. I don't know if I'm just used to the bitter sensation on the back of my tongue or if the side effect has diminished, but the taste is no longer enough reason for me to discontinue taking Lunesta. I am hopeful however, that they will perfect their formula so this will no longer be an issue for anyone. | previous page | post followup | alert a moderator

Ambien leaves a bitter taste for me. My tongue is sore and has an orange coating. I am not sure it is the Ambien but that is the only regular medication I take besides aspirin.---and only half a 10 mg. tablet at night. Been going on for 3-4 months. everything has a bad taste. Anybody experienced this? | previous page | post followup | alert a moderator

I tried Lunesta last night and about 20 minutes later I had a terrible taste in my mouth. I grabbed my bottle of water which increased the taste over the top. I even tried potato chips, cookies, followed by pepsi and it was still there. This morning and this evening the taste is still in my mouth. I actually thought that maybe the pill had melted in the back of my throat and that is what caused the problem. Curiosity got the best of me and searching I found this web-site. Now I know...thanks | previous page | post followup | alert a moderator

I too definitely have the bitter taste. It's gone on for several days. It's not worth it. Anyone find anything that works besides Lunesta and Ambien? | previous page | post followup | alert a moderator
| Lunesta - bitter, but goes away |
| posted by tony on 22 Apr 2006 at 9:58 pm |
I have been a chronic insomniac since 5 years old. Sure, lunesta is bitter, but if you drink more than 8 oz of water....it is OK. When I drink 16oz of water, there is no taste at all. If I drink too little, then I do experience the bitter taste.
For someone who really cherishes sleep, this minor side-effect can be tolerated, and if adequate water is consumed...there is no aftertaste.

| Butterflies |
| posted by Ryan on 27 Apr 2006 at 1:06 pm |
Everyone (on the "inside") knows it's because Lunesta is actaully made from butterflies; mainly monarchs, which accounts for the horrible aftertaste.
The commercials actually depict the users eating the butterfly quickly after landing, but it didn't recieve good responses from test audiences.| previous page | post followup | alert a moderator

Lunesta causes the saliva that we produce to change into a bitter fluid. She suggested that I drink a large glass of orange juice as I'm getting ready for bed. It sure helps cut down on that taste! | previous page | post followup | alert a moderator

Have taken Ambien for a few years.
Just switched to Lunesta. Fell asleep for about 1 hour. Was awakened by a bitter aftertaste that seemed to be crawling up my nose and down my throat. Am now writing this WIDE AWAKE!
Orange juice helped a bit, as did a small bowl of brown rice.| previous page | post followup | alert a moderator

| posted by Scott on 02 May 2006 at 10:49 pm |
I've been on lunesta 2mgs for about 3 months now and never felt the need to give up good sleep just to have a slightly different tasting saliva/tongue. If you're a drunk or a drugger that takes pills to get high, Ambian will destroy you.
Lunesta is easy to avoid, but completely sufficient at it's job when needed. I vote "Lunesta".| previous page | post followup | alert a moderator
| Ambien / Lunesta from another country? |
| posted by Yuri on 25 May 2006 at 4:15 pm |
I've taken Ambien and I can say that I slept all night and I never once had a bad taste.
Question: Has anyone ever bought either Lunesta or Ambien (generic) from another country?
My Rx ran out and I went ahead and bought Ambien online, but it just doesn't look like the one I've always taken (even though it does say Zolpidem on the packet).
Please advise| previous page | post followup | alert a moderator

I just started taking this and as you have all discovered it has a horrible taste. So I've been experimenting with something to avoid that. Last night I took it with a half a glass of milk and I didn't taste it at all last night! And this morning it wasn't anything near the feet taste that it normally has. I still couldn't drink water, but the juice and the coffee and cereal all tasted fine. I hope this will help some people. | previous page | post followup | alert a moderator

I can't belive this...for real the taste I have been tasting from that Lunesta is not in my head. Its beyond horrible, bitter, spicy, just overall sickening. Yes, it did help me sleep but this is just ridiciclous. Thanks for being honest with all your opinions. I truly appreciate it! | previous page | post followup | alert a moderator

I also hated the taste of Lunesta when I first tried it, but I continued to use it. I would much rather have a restful night's sleep than a tasty breakfast. Sometime in the first month, I began to enjoy the taste. To this day, I still enjoy the taste. | previous page | post followup | alert a moderator
| Lunesta - This Is Too Horrible To Continue |
| posted by Meghan on 27 Jun 2006 at 1:33 am |
My doctor prescribed Lunesta a couple months ago and I haven't taken it again since the first night because the horrid taste that was in my mouth for over 30 hours. I thought "Never again will I take that awful, awful medicine. Well, tonight I got desperate and thought that if I took it with a lot of water then maybe it would be better--that maybe last time I hadn't taken it with enough. Anyway, it was fine til the last few sips of the water and then the horrible taste came back. And it's not even a bitter taste in my mouth, I can feel some kind of something rising up through my stomach and into my throat and nose--like it's in my very breath.
So I immediately went to the kitchen and ate two slices of bread which tasted normal and then I thought "Peanut butter! Maybe that will help!" And it was fine until now, when the drug is just starting to work and the horrible breath is starting to really fill my up mouth up with a disgusting taste. It's really starting to hit my system right now and it's harder to type so yeah, it works.
But at what cost? I'm so thinkin' about Ambien right now. Those side effects are way more tolerable if you take it like you should and go to bed right away. Like I should be doing now but can't because of this terrible bitter/chemically tasting stuff coming up from my throat. This should be taken from the market. I wonder if there's anyone out there who CAN take it without this side effect. I'm on my way to bed now. I know the drug will work, but I don't think I'll use it again. I'm calling my doc tomorrow. This stuff is not worth the terrible taste. But it could maybe help me lose weight from not wanting to eat anymore. Hahaha. Hope they never give it to people who are trying to overcome anorexia! | previous page | post followup | alert a moderator
| Lunesta - Never Took A Worse Tasting Medicine |
| posted by Tina on 03 July 2006 at 5:20 am |
Like all of you I have found the aftertaste of Lunesta to be absolutely horrible.
Right now I'm not sure how much longer I'll be taking/trying it.
The first night I took it it worked great. I got my first 8 hours of sleep in ages...and the first solid 8 hours, without getting up at all, in even longer.
The second night I took it....it didn't work very well at all. I woke up after getting about 4 hours and couldn't get back to sleep again.
With me...it took a good 22 hours for the taste to go away but...the taste comes right back as soon as you take the next dose.
I find it hard to believe that the pharmaceutical company can't figure out a way to eliminate the aftertaste.

| Try Chocolate Before Lunesta |

There was another drug I took some time ago that left a bitter taste and the Dr. told me to eat a Hershey's kiss before and after taking the pill. I have tried this with Lunesta and it has worked VERY well. The more chocolate before, the better....even tho we all know that's not the BEST time to be eating that chocolate!! :)
Good luck! Hope it works for you| previous page | post followup | alert a moderator

I was recently prescribed both Lunesta and Ambien CR, as a trial. Took 3 days of ambien, and now my first dose of Lunesta. Thank you people for sharing your opinions. Because I thought I might be having a reaction or something. The taste...like licking a rusty metal pole.
I have very unusual sleep patterns, and not really sure about my satisfaction with ambien. Anyone who has tried both, have any criticism they wish someone would have told them? Thanks| previous page | post followup | alert a moderator
