Botox caused acne

posted by Jocelyne Woodley on 15 Jan 2006 at 7:49 pm

I had Botox injection June 2005. Two weeks after my forehead and temples were covered with small pinples. The dermatologist said it was acne. I am 59 and I had no more acne. Can Botox cause acne? I loved the effect on my forehead but I hesitate to do it again. What do you think? Thank you

Same Botox Problem
posted by Anon on 24 Aug 2006 at 9:51 pm
I'm 55 and have had 2 Botox sessions 4 months apart. After the last one, my forehead broke out in tiny blister-like bumps and had a stinging and itching sensation as well. The pores completely clogged up. I also blame the Botox. I hesitate to have more injections as much as I loved the results, but the acne is worse than the anti-wrinkle benefit.

Vitamin B5 As Acne Treatment
posted by jane on 21 Jan 2007 at 6:21 am
I have successfully cleared my stubborn long term acne using high dose vitamin b5. I recently switched to SkinB5 which also contains zinc and vitamin A.

IU think the combination of all these powerful acne clearing vitamins enhancesthe effects. Remember to take a multi-B with SkinB5 as high dose vitamin B5 may compete for other vitamin Bs.

Botox Caused Acne

I am experiencing the same problem. In the past I have never had a problem with acne. I got the Botox injections (in my forehead) and one to two weeks later my entire forehead was covered with acne. It is over a month later and the acne will not go away! I asked the clinician and she said it's just "a coincidence" but now I'm not so sure.

The same thing happened to me!! I got botox in March and a few weeks later, I noticed small bumps on my forehead!! Not putting two and two together, I got botox again in June, and this time, I broke out all over my forehead in cyst-like acne bumps. It has been nearly two months, and the bumps are still there, they are not going away, and they really hurt! Has this happened to anyone else?? Any suggestions!! I need help bc this is so stressful and awful!!! Please post soon!

Acne From Botox
posted by anon on 21 Aug 2007 at 7:02 pm
I've had the same result unfortunately. I've had three Botox treatments and the first time was fine - no bumps. No, after the third treatment, the bumps are horrible! I've suspected the Botox and these posts are confirming my suspicions. It's been two months since the last Botox and I'm not planning to get any more treatments. Can anyone tell me if and when the bumps go away?!

Forehead Acne After Botox
posted by anon on 26 Aug 2007 at 8:04 pm
I've had Botox in the forehead three times. The first time was great. The second time I got the forehead bumps and they started to go away when I got my third Botox treatment. The bumps got bad again and now I am due for the Botox but the bumps are gone. I can positively associate the acne with the Botox now and unfortunately will pass on the Botox. The itchy bumps have stopped forming but the lines are coming back. I believe it has something to do with the sweatglands and vellus hairs on the forehead being plugged up by the Botox toxin. It relaxes muscles afterall. I also have a lot of sundamage to my face.

Acne Caused By BOTOX
posted by Alicia on 09 Sept 2007 at 3:09 pm
My first injection was fine March of '07. In late July I had the second round (both times between brows). I grew horrible, itchy, cyst and pus filled acne. SO ugly. It is now worse in the last month. My dermatologist prescribed retinol which I have used for nearly a month. My acne seems to worsening. Am I rushing the improving results that retinol is suppose to produce? I prefer not to take oral antibiotics. I would like to continue having the great results seen the FIRST time around. But I absolutely will not take the risk the third time. Seems like subsequents injections are what caused the reactions but I am not finding any studies to document this. My dermatologist has said this is not what is causing the acne. Guess if she can't charge for the shots she now gets paid for treating the acne, ha! Are treatments working?

Botox Skin Acne
posted by Linda on 20 Sept 2007 at 9:45 am
If you can give up the Botox, the bumps will go away over time. It can take 6 months since last injections. I have concluded that the relaxed muscles can no longer push the dead skin cells and debris from my forehead pores. My derm also said it was unrelated and treated me with Retinol (Tazorac) type product which over time produces peeling. It is important to exfoliant daily. I have found that by using "Pretty Feet and Hands" daily in the shower works great. Use it on dry skin with dry hands. You can find it in the foot section in the grocery store. It works by forming tiny parrafin wax balls that GENTLY remove surface debris. This, in turn, helps open up the pore so it can breathe. But I will never again get Botox. I know my skin and I think the dermatologists out there should get the connection, but they don't. All they want to do is sell more Botox.

Had Botox And Acne Breakout!
posted by Lisa on 25 Sept 2007 at 9:27 am
HI, I’m so pleased I found this website! I thought I was going a bit nuts!

I suffer with adult acne and have done for 7 years. I take antibiotic medication which works well for me.

I am 34 and had botox for my forehead and glabella wrinkles 2 weeks ago and have totally broken out all across my forehead (it has NEVER been as bad as it is now!). I spoke with the plastic surgeon who administered the botox and he said he has never known anyone 'breakout' but I still maintained it was too much of a co-incidence.

I am due to go back and see him for a top up in a couple of week’s time but now I’m not so sure. I think I’m going to print off this page and take it with me!

No-one has answered though really how long the acne lasts - is it for the entire duration of the 3-4 month period that botox lasts for? Any advice would be very gratefully appreciated.

Thank you
Lisa

I've actually contacted the company who produces the botox I had (vistabel via a company called allergen) and i've asked them direct. As a pharmaceutical company they have to tell you if they've had any reports of this in side effects. I will let you know what they say to me - I've had a reference number to say my call has been logged and someone will be in touch very soon.

Good Lisa. That is the kind of thing I do-go to the source. What is your acne like? Is it different from the kind you've had before taking medications? I tried Doxycycline for my forehead breakout but it didn't help. I've been "Botox Free" now for a good 5 months and the breakouts continue. My forehead is all lumpy now and scarred. The bumps won't heal like regular acne. I use Tazorac to exfoliate, but the bumps still come. I look forward to finding out more myself.

I contacted Allergan about the forehead breakouts and they told me that they have had reports already about this side effect. But no other information was given to me. They said I have to get that from my doctor. Just when I think the bumps are fading, I get another breakout. But I also notice that the wrinkles in my forehead are continuing to return which tells me that the paralyzing muscles are not completely back to normal. So, it can take a long time for the bumps to resolve. I'm still waiting. I'm not getting any more Botox in the meantime.

Major Forehead/Eyebrow Acne
posted by Annette on 28 Oct 2007 at 7:56 pm
Sadly I am a member of this emerging club - got Botox in fret lines between my brows and shortly thereafter had the most insane forehead breakout ever as well as millions of zits in my brows. Have had several botox sessions since ... and been to several derms for the acne breakouts. After trying to figure out every possible cause to the strange forehead acne I have narrowed it down to the one and only Botox. I too have had two different derms tell me that they've never heard of Botox causing such an outbreak ("totally safe" blah, blah, blah). I've had no similar acne outbreaks my whole life and have NEVER broken out on my forehead or in my brows until now. It's an odd breakout too ... starts on my temples and rashes out down the perimeter of my face, then trails down to my neck and chest. Itchy, hurtful, tiny, hard beady, zitty things ... WHAT A NIGHTMARE ... no more botox for me ever again (I'll dust off the box of frownies and be done with it).

Botox Acne

It is clear that some women are reacting with blister-like itchy bumps from Botox. My doctor thinks that my reaction may be due to the fact that I underwent Accutane treatment for acne earlier in my life and that the pores have been altered by that.

I also have sun damage and a genetic tendency towards plugged pores. Finally, seven or so months since my last Botox injection, the lumps are settling down flat again. Some have to be expressed though. It takes alot of patience. What helped-was a peel at the derm's called a "beta-lift". IT's salicylic acid and retin-A. It peeled my face and the plugged pores were able to clear out much easier. And the whole face looks better. Well worth the hundred bucks. Better than Botox. Skin gets clear and tighter. Great for 50-plus skin and it helps the Botos-caused acne.

Botox Induced Acne
posted by Lisa on 25 Nov 2007 at 2:53 pm
Linda,

My acne induced by botox was the same as usual outbreaks that i get - but botox triggered a reaction - for definite!

I am almost over 3 months into botox now and acne has reduced back down again. Not sure i will consider another course of botox! The company Vitabel / Allergen have said they have heard of blister / acne outbreaks associated with botox although the do say it is extremely rare.

I have to say alot of my friends have botox and don't have any problems and therefore I can only conclude if you are pre-disposed to acne already then maybe you are more likely to get caught out with an outbreak?

I would like to know though how your pores 'change' after roaccutane? i had that last year? just wondered as you've had it and had a reaction and so have i .... is that more than just co-incidence too? (incidentally did roaccutane work for you?)

Botox Caused Acne

Lisa, it sure sounds as though ex-Accutane AND acne-prone people should be screened/warned differently before getting Botox.

Here is what I do know: When laser resurfacing first came out for facial fine lines, some women who were actively taking Accutane at the time ,underwent the resurfacing procedure and were permanently and horribly scarred. The dermatolgists quickly figured out that patients actively taking Accutane will not heal if they undergo laser treatment at the same time. Thank God I was not one of those who found that out too late.

Now, however, it seems we may be experiencing an unforeseen side effect to Botox. My theory is that when a person who has undergone an earlier Accutane treatment later gets Botox, then his/her skin gets this unsightly side effect of itchy blisters, etc. because of the skin's altered state.

It was 20 years ago that I had a very high daily dose (120 mg) of Accutane for 16 weeks long. Accutane is so potent that it not only stops the production of sebum/oil, but it also alters the structure of the follicle and pore as it permanently dries up and shrinks. That was a good thing until I got the Botox. I believe my skin simply can't handle both the paralying effect of Botox AND the parching effect of Accutane. And so the new bumps were created.

Today, my forehead is still getting the bumps, but very few. And they just happen to pop up right alongside the fine lines/wrinkles as they slowly return. This tells me it's the Botox. Because as my wrinkles 'reactivate' since having Botox over 9 months ago, they are coming back complete with their own lines of acne. I had never had this type of breakout before. Never were they so itchy. My brows are the worst. And I remember my brows were horribly itchy on the Accutane, too. There has got to be a connection.

I reported this to Allergan and they said they would look into it. The case worker who took my call seemed very interested in what was happening, given the past Accutane use. And he even said that he could see why it might be happening. They said I could call them back for updates if I wanted to, so I will post again if I learn more.

Let me know how you forehead is doing. What does your dermatologist think about this possible Botox acne/Accutane connection? Did you get relief from the acne after undergoing accutane treatment? The Accutane treatment can be brutal. Mine sure was, as I had a very high dose each day. (you wrote of Ro-accutane. Are you sure you are talking about the same stuff-?)

Another question to ponder: Do/did you ever have body acne? I'm just trying to make some connections here. Also, I'm 56, post menopausal. I think that's a contributing factor too. My skin is just plain tired and old and I'm just going to have to get used to it.

I had botox Dec 14/07. About 2 weeks after, I started breaking out on my forehead. I have never had anything like this before! Large red pimple like bumps. Especially at the injection site. It's now been a month and it's not clearing up. I just spoke to the company, Allergan, who makes Botox and they have had reports of this acne being a side affect. I WILL NOT be getting anymore Botox injections! I would much rather have a couple of creases in my forehead than a forehead full of hideous, large red acne! It's painful and a little itchy.

When will this clear up??????

It can take months for Botox-caused bumps to clear up. You have to wait until ALL paralysis is long gone before pores return to normal. I'm finally seeing a lasting clear up and my last (and final ever) injection of Botox was over 9 months ago. My forehead creases are still returning and deepening even though my last Botox injection was that long ago. You really have to be patient. Just when you think it's over, you get another breakout. very aggravating. Cut bangs.

Botox Acne

Hi - Just found this site and it's both a relief and slightly horrifying. I received Botox treatment just about 2 months ago, on 11/20/07 for migraine treatment. I have never in my life had any issue with acne other than some breakouts related to hormone surging when I was pregnant. For the last month 1/2 my entire forehead has been filled with mini puss filled pimples and also deep painful mound-like pimples. The worst part is that they apparently itch or bother me in my sleep so that I awake having scratched or picked at them in my sleep and I now have these scars and scabs all over my face. Not very good for a professional working woman trying to come back after 6 months out on maternity leave and recouping from horrible post-pardum chronic daily migraines.

This is truly awful. Plus, to add insult to injury, the Botox does not seem to be doing much for my migraines.

So as like all the others, I also received pimples from my botox. Both times now. I'm only 26 but have deep lines in my forehead, had botox last year 2 weeks later pimples, they lasted almost 4 months. This time it took 3 weeks to see the pimples. However I have never had acne or used any acne meds..
MY BIG QUESTION IS???????? IS THERE ANY OTHER PRODUCT OUT THERE THAT DOES THE SAME THING AS BOTOX BUT IS NOT BOTOX??????????

Acne Like Blisters For 2 Years After Botox
posted by Paul on 13 Feb 2008 at 6:47 pm
Hello there, I'm a 40 year old male, I tried Botox injections 2 years ago for a facial tic and also decided to try smoothing out the forehead. I have had these acne like blisters on my forehead ever since. they seem to crop up really fast and seem to be filled with clear lymphatic fluid. If I pick or scratch one, it will continue to leak for a long time then finally crust over, there is usually no visible bleeding other than the clear liquid. once dry they seem to heal pretty fast but the initial leaky stage will usually last a whole day and they are pretty unsightly. it seems like they clear up about once a month for a couple of days if I'm lucky, but then always return. I would really like to find a solution to this as it doesn't seem as though it's ever going to go away.

I am horrified, I have been suffering with the hard mounds under my skin between my eyebrows and also at the hairline. They take forever to go away and they erupt with stinging pus-like liqud. It seems that the peach fuzz and hair follicles get plugged up. It also feels very greasy. I'm 54 years old and have never had greasy skin. Now I get acne AND wrinkles
