Howard C. Bauchner, M.D will be the 16th editor of the 127-year-old Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), executive VP and CEO of AMA (American Medical Association), Michael D. Maves, M.D., has announced. Dr. Bauchner currently works for Archives of Disease in Childhood of the Royal College of Paediatrics, UK, where he has held that US-based position since 2003. Dr. Bauchner is a pediatrics and community health sciences professor at BUSM (Boston University Schools of Medicine) and Public Health, as well as vice-chairman of the pediatrics department and assistant dean, alumni affairs and continuing education at BUSM.

Dr. Bauchner has been on several editorial boards, including the British Medical Journal and Journal Watch. Bauchner has published over 125 peer-reviewed papers in academic journal, mainly on clinical trials, quality improvement and health promotion.

Dr. Bauchner will have editorial oversight over the nine JAMA Archive journals as well as the main journal itself (JAMA) – all journals are published by the American Medical Association.

Dr. Bauchner follows Catharine D. DeAngelis, M.D., M.P.H., who returns to Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Baltimore after 11 years in the post.

A Committee consisting of members of the Journal Oversight Committee, the JAMA Editorial Board, AMA’s Board of Trustees and senior management, as well as assistance from Russell Reynolds Associates, an executive search company, liaised together to find and select the journal’s new Editor-In-Chief.

Some details about Dr. Bauchner:

  • He went to the University of California, Berkeley for his undergraduate training
  • In 1979 he graduated at Boston University School of Medicine
  • He did his internship and junior year at Boston City Hospital
  • His senior-year residency was completed at Yale-New Haven Hospital
  • He then went back to Boston City Hospital as Chief Resident
  • He received additional training in epidemiology and statistics as a Robert Wood Johnson General Pediatrics Academic Development Scholar at Yale-New Haven Hospital

Dr. Bauchner and Chris (wife) have two children.
