Drchrono, a free iPad app, aims to digitize patient data as EHR (electronic health records) and bring up-to-date a cumbersome system of keeping manual charts. The company, called Drchrono, says it has closed $675,000 in second round funding.

Recent studies have estimated that approximately 20% of all doctors in the USA today have an iPad, and this number is expected to grow rapidly.

Michael Nusimow, CEO of drchrono, said:

“Healthcare is broken and we see an opportunity. We’re pleased to have attracted investments from such supportive venture capitalists and innovative angels. We look forward to working with our investors, benefiting from their advice and assistance as we set about on a course to bring profound change to the medical industry.”

The company says that so far, its user base includes over 5,000 physicians. It adds that it is concentrating on Apple’s iPad and cloud computing to develop “a better healthcare experience.”

Daniel Kivatinos, cofounder and COO of drchrono, said:

“Our goal is for physicians to be able to treat patients and manage their medical practice without getting distracted by complicated computer software.”

Drchrono is an iPad healthcare EHR (electronic health record) platform. It claims to handle everything a physician may need to run his/her practice, including:
  • Medical records
  • Electronic prescribing using a system called eRx ePrescribing
  • Paperless medical billing – the system integrates with all American insurance companies
  • Patient management
  • The data can be run from anywhere
  • Dictating notes via audio
  • Access lab results
  • Photographs
  • Videos
It is also said to be the first iPad EHR to implement real time medical speech-to-text.

As the Obama administration is rewarding doctors to get their health records online, the electronic medical records element of this application is expected to become popular.

The company says a team of security experts are working hard to make sure the system is secure and HIPAA compliant.

Users start off paying nothing for the basic service. Payment is required for higher functionality.

The latest investors in this second round of funding were General Catalyst, Charles River Ventures, 500 Startups, Paul Buchheit (Gmail creator and FriendFeed cofounder), Matt Cutts (Google’s Principal Engineer), and the Start Fund.
