The Nobel Prize for Medicine went to two Australian scientists who discovered the bacterium that causes inflammation of the stomach and ulcers of the stomach. The researchers are called Barry Marshall and Robin Warren.

They demonstrated that the bacterium Helicobacter pylori plays a crucial role in the development of both stomach and intestinal ulcers.

Thanks to their discovery both conditions can now be cured with a short-term course of antibiotics.

It was believed that stomach ulcers were mainly stress related. These two scientists proved and showed that Helicobacter pylori causes over 90% of intestinal ulcers and nearly 80% of stomach ulcers.
