Coconut sugar is enjoying a boom in popularity, thanks partly to some people claiming it is a healthful alternative to other sugar types. The truth is less clear and consuming too much of any sugar may contribute to health issues.

It is essential that people understand both the benefits and risks of using coconut sugar. This is true as many may turn to alternative sweeteners such as coconut sugar to try to fulfill their cravings in a guilt-free way.

Coconut sugar comes from the coconut palm tree. People also referred to it as coconut palm sugar, or coconut flower nectar in its liquid form.

For every 100 g of high-fructose corn syrup, there are 76 g of carbohydrates of which 75.65 g is sugar. The remaining 24 g is water. Again, the tiny fraction left is mostly traces of compounds such as sodium and iron.

For every 100 g of coconut sugar, there are 100 g of carbohydrates of which 75 g is sugar. In terms of trace elements, 100 g contains 625 milligrams (mg) of potassium and 125 mg of sodium.

Compared to granulated sugar and high-fructose corn syrup, coconut sugar has higher levels of iron, zinc, and calcium, according to research from the Philippines government’s Food and Nutrition Research Institute.

Also, coconut sugar contains trace amounts of phytonutrients and antioxidants, such as polyphenols, flavonoids, and anthocyanidin.

What else is there to know about coconut sugar?

According to the above analysis of coconut palm sap, coconut sugar contains some inulin, whereas table sugar and corn syrup do not.

Inulin is a specific fiber that may be beneficial to the body, helping improve gut health and slowing glucose absorption.

It is, however, important to note that the quantities of beneficial compounds may be small, and a person would have to eat a lot of coconut sugar to get a healthy dose of them.

Also, because coconut sugar is still high in calories and sugars, eating a lot would mean significant excess energy consumption, leading to potential weight gain.

Coconut sugar contains high levels of fructose. This is because sucrose is made up of half fructose. So coconut sugar, with 70 to 80 percent sucrose content, would have 35 to 40 percent fructose content.

Fructose is thought of as a low GI food because the body cannot convert it immediately to energy. However, this does not make fructose a better sugar.

Consuming too much fructose, particularly from sugar-sweetened drinks, may still put a person at risk for health disorders including diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular disease, according to research published by the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
