Indonesian health authorities have confirmed that two people, an 8-year-old boy and a 39-year-old man both were infected with the H5N1 strain of the Bird Flu virus. The boy died on 15th December, the man died on 12th December.

The young boy became ill with a high temperature and a cough on December 8th. The man became ill with a high temperature, headache, panting and a cough on December 9th.

Family members and close friends of both victims have been placed under observation – none of them have developed any signs indicating bird flu infection.

Indonesia has now had 16 confirmed human cases of bird flu infection. Eleven of them have died.
