The Chinese Ministry of Health has confirmed that a 32-year-old man died of bird flu infection, H5N1.

The man was from the province of Guangdong. He developed bird flu type symptoms on 22 February – high temperature followed by pneumonia. He was hospitalized, but unfortunately his condition deteriorated and he died on 2 March.

The man was unemployed; the area where he worked has not reported any cases of bird flu infection since 2004.

So far, 15 humans have been infected with bird flu H5N1 in China, of which nine have died. There are two patients currently in hospital who are in a critical condition.

This is the first reported case of a human in the Guangdong province.
