The FDA has said that the abortion pill, RU-486, was not linked to the death of a woman who had taken it. Regulators said the second death is still being looked into and no decision has yet been taken on that one.

Both deaths were reported in March, 2006. Regulators said it appears the patient in the second death had an infection.

RU-486 (Mifeprex or Mifepristone) is a drug used for the termination of a pregnancy which is less than 49 days’ old. The patient is first given RU-486 and then Misoprostol a two days later.

Four other women in California had previously died after taking the abortion pill, but RU-486 was not proved to be the cause.

Many people have called for the drug to be banned as a result of these deaths.
