Gastrocrom is a brand-name prescription drug. It’s FDA-approved to treat mastocytosis in adults and children ages 2 years and older.

With mastocytosis, the body makes too many mast cells. A mast cell is a type of white blood cell. Mastocytosis can cause symptoms such as headache, diarrhea, and itching. For more information about this condition, see the “Gastrocrom uses” section below.

Drug details

Gastrocrom contains the active drug cromolyn sodium. It belongs to a class of drugs called mast cell stabilizers. (A class of drugs is a group of drugs that work in a similar way.) Gastrocrom works to treat mastocytosis by stopping mast cells from releasing certain chemicals. For more information, see the “How Gastrocrom works” section below.

Gastrocrom comes as a liquid that you mix with water and then swallow. You’ll likely take the drug four times per day. Gastrocrom liquid is available in a strength of 20 milligrams per milliliter (mg/mL).

Effectiveness

For information about the effectiveness of Gastrocrom, see the “Gastrocrom uses” section below.

Gastrocrom is a brand-name drug that contains the active drug cromolyn sodium. This active drug is also available as a generic medication. A generic drug is an exact copy of the active drug in a brand-name medication.

The generic is considered to be as safe and effective as the original drug. Generics tend to cost less than brand-name drugs.

If you’re interested in using the generic form of Gastrocrom, talk with your doctor. They can tell you if it comes in forms and strengths that can be used for your condition.

Gastrocrom can cause mild or serious side effects.* The following lists contain some of the key side effects that may occur while taking Gastrocrom. These lists do not include all possible side effects.

For more information about the possible side effects of Gastrocrom, talk with your doctor or pharmacist. They can give you tips on how to deal with any side effects that may be bothersome.

Note: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) tracks side effects of drugs it has approved. If you would like to notify the FDA about a side effect you’ve had with Gastrocrom, you can do so through MedWatch.

* Most of the side effects of Gastrocrom are also symptoms of mastocytosis, which Gastrocrom is used to treat. Mastocytosis is a condition in which the body makes too many mast cells (a type of white blood cell). For more information about this condition, see the “Gastrocrom uses” section below.

Mild side effects

Mild side effects* of Gastrocrom can include:

Most of these side effects may go away within a few days or a couple of weeks. But if they become more severe or don’t go away, talk with your doctor or pharmacist.

Side effects in children

Gastrocrom is approved to treat mastocytosis* in children ages 2 years and older. The side effects of Gastrocrom in children are similar to side effects in adults. See the “Mild side effects” and “Serious side effects” sections above for more information.

* Mastocytosis is a condition in which the body makes too many mast cells (a type of white blood cell). For more information about this condition, see the “Gastrocrom uses” section below.

Side effect details

You may wonder how often certain side effects occur with this drug or whether certain side effects pertain to it. Here’s some detail on certain side effects this drug may or may not cause.

Allergic reaction

As with most drugs, some people can have an allergic reaction after taking Gastrocrom. It isn’t known how often this side effect may have occurred in clinical studies of the drug. However, in general, having mastocytosis (the condition Gastrocrom treats) increases your risk for having an allergic reaction.

Symptoms of a mild allergic reaction can include:

  • skin rash
  • itchiness
  • flushing (warmth, swelling, or redness in your skin)

A more severe allergic reaction is rare but possible. Symptoms of a severe allergic reaction can include:

  • swelling under your skin, typically in your eyelids, lips, hands, or feet
  • swelling of your tongue, mouth, or throat
  • trouble breathing

Call your doctor right away if you have an allergic reaction to Gastrocrom, as the reaction could become severe. Call 911 or your local emergency number if your symptoms feel life threatening or if you think you’re having a medical emergency.

Headache

Headache is a possible side effect of Gastrocrom.

In clinical studies, headache occurred in 4.6% of people who took Gastrocrom. However, it isn’t known how many people may have had a headache while taking other treatments.

If you have bothersome headaches while taking Gastrocrom, talk with your doctor. They may suggest ways to relieve this side effect.

Gastrointestinal problems

Gastrocrom can cause gastrointestinal (GI) problems. These side effects may include abdominal (belly) pain, nausea and vomiting, and diarrhea.

In clinical studies, 2.3% of people taking Gastrocrom had abdominal pain, and 3.4% had nausea. And diarrhea affected 4.6% of people taking Gastrocrom. It’s not known how many people may have had these side effects while taking other treatments in these studies.

Vomiting wasn’t seen in clinical studies of Gastrocrom. But after the drug was made available to the public, vomiting was reported as a possible side effect.

If you’re concerned about having GI problems while taking Gastrocrom, talk with your doctor.

Rash and itchiness

Rash and itchiness are possible side effects of Gastrocrom.

In clinical studies, 2.3% of people who took Gastrocrom developed a rash, and 3.4% had itchy skin. It isn’t known how many people may have had a rash or itchy skin while taking other treatments.

If you experience a bothersome rash or itchiness while taking Gastrocrom, talk with your doctor. They may suggest ways to relieve these side effects.

Muscle pain

It’s possible to have muscle pain while taking Gastrocrom.

Of people who took Gastrocrom in clinical studies, 3.4% had muscle pain. The number of people who may have had muscle pain while taking other treatments in these studies isn’t known.

If you’re concerned about having muscle pain while taking Gastrocrom, talk with your doctor.

Weight gain (not a side effect)

Weight gain wasn’t a side effect reported in clinical studies of Gastrocrom.

However, mastocytosis* (the condition Gastrocrom treats) may cause weight loss. And treating mastocytosis might cause you to gain back some of the weight that you lost. For this reason, it’s possible to gain weight while taking Gastrocrom. But this may not necessarily be a side effect of the drug.

If you’re concerned about weight gain while taking Gastrocrom, talk with your doctor. They can suggest healthy ways for you to manage your weight while taking this drug.

* Mastocytosis is a condition in which the body makes too many mast cells (a type of white blood cell). For more information about this condition, see the “Gastrocrom uses” section below.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approves prescription drugs such as Gastrocrom to treat certain conditions. Gastrocrom may also be used off-label for other conditions. Off-label drug use means using a drug for a purpose other than what it’s been approved for by the FDA.

Gastrocrom for mastocytosis

Gastrocrom is FDA-approved to treat mastocytosis. It can be used in adults and children ages 2 years and older. Mastocytosis is a condition in which the body makes too many mast cells. A mast cell is a type of white blood cell.

Mast cells contain certain chemicals that play a role in your body’s immune system. Examples of these chemicals include histamine and leukotrienes. Symptoms of mastocytosis develop when mast cells release these chemicals into your blood. Symptoms usually occur in short periods known as episodes, which usually last 15 to 30 minutes at a time.

Symptoms of mastocytosis may include:

Certain triggers can cause mastocytosis symptoms, by causing mast cells to release their chemicals. Examples of possible triggers include:

Effectiveness for mastocytosis

Gastrocrom has been found to be effective for treating mastocytosis in adults and children ages 2 years and older.

In clinical studies, Gastrocrom was compared with the following treatments:

  • chlorpheniramine (Chlor-Trimeton) taken with cimetidine (Tagamet), and
  • a placebo (a treatment without an active drug)

These studies looked at how many people had their mastocytosis symptoms relieved after taking one of the treatments listed above. In these studies, Gastrocrom was effective at reducing certain symptoms of mastocytosis. Symptoms started improving within 2 to 6 weeks of starting treatment. Specific symptoms that were relieved included:

However, the exact number of people who experienced symptom relief after taking Gastrocrom or other treatments in these studies isn’t known.

Off-label uses for Gastrocrom

In addition to the use listed above, Gastrocrom may also be used off-label for other conditions. Off-label drug use means using a drug for a purpose other than what it’s approved for by the FDA. Below is an example of off-label use for Gastrocrom.

Gastrocrom for food allergies

Gastrocrom isn’t FDA-approved to treat food allergies. It may sometimes be prescribed off-label for this use. However, clinical guidelines don’t support using Gastrocrom to treat food allergies.

If you have questions about using Gastrocrom to treat food allergies, talk with your doctor.

Gastrocrom and children

Gastrocrom is FDA-approved to treat mastocytosis in children ages 2 years and older. For more information, see the “Gastrocrom uses” section above.

The actual price you’ll pay depends on your insurance plan, your location, and the pharmacy you use.

Keep in mind that you may be able to get a 90-day supply of Gastrocrom. If approved by your insurance company, getting a 90-day supply of the drug could reduce your number of trips to the pharmacy and help lower the cost. If you’re interested in this option, talk with your doctor or your insurance company.

Before approving coverage for Gastrocrom, your insurance company may require you to get prior authorization. This means that your doctor and insurance company will need to communicate about your prescription before the insurance company will cover the drug. The insurance company will review the prior authorization request and decide if the drug will be covered.

If you’re not sure if you’ll need to get prior authorization for Gastrocrom, contact your insurance company.

Financial and insurance assistance

If you need financial support to pay for Gastrocrom, help may be available.

The Medicine Assistance Tool website lists programs that may help lower the cost of this drug. For more information and to find out if you’re eligible for support, visit their website.

Mail-order pharmacies

Gastrocrom may be available through a mail-order pharmacy. Using this service may help lower the drug’s cost and allow you to get your medication without leaving home.

If recommended by your doctor, you may be able to receive a 90-day supply of Gastrocrom, so there’s less concern about running out of the medication. If you’re interested in this option, talk with your doctor and your insurance company. Some Medicare plans may help cover the cost of mail-order medications.

If you don’t have insurance, you can ask your doctor or pharmacist about online pharmacy options.

Generic version

Gastrocrom is available in a generic form called cromolyn sodium. A generic drug is an exact copy of the active drug in a brand-name medication. The generic is considered to be as safe and effective as the original drug. And generics tend to cost less than brand-name drugs.

If your doctor has prescribed Gastrocrom and you’re interested in taking cromolyn sodium instead, talk with your doctor. They may have a preference for one version or the other. You’ll also need to check your insurance plan, as it may only cover one or the other.

The Gastrocrom dosage your doctor prescribes will depend on several factors. These include:

  • your age
  • other medical conditions you may have

Typically, your doctor will start you on the recommended dosage for treating your condition. Then they’ll adjust it over time to reach the amount that’s right for you. Your doctor will ultimately prescribe the smallest dosage that provides the desired effect.

The following information describes dosages that are commonly used or recommended. However, be sure to take the dosage your doctor prescribes for you. Your doctor will determine the best dosage to fit your needs.

Drug forms and strengths

Gastrocrom comes as a liquid that you swallow. The liquid is packaged in small single-use containers.

Gastrocrom is available in one strength: 20 milligrams per milliliter (mg/mL) of liquid. Each container contains 100 mg of the active drug cromolyn sodium.

Dosage for mastocytosis

Gastrocrom is approved to treat mastocytosis in adults and children ages 2 years and older.

The typical dosage of Gastrocrom for adults is two containers (200 mg) stirred in water, four times per day. You’ll usually take the drug at least 30 minutes before meals and at bedtime.

Your doctor may give you a different dosage depending on several factors, including your age and whether you have kidney or liver disease. If you have questions about the dosage that’s right for you, talk with your doctor.

Children’s dosage

Gastrocrom is approved to treat mastocytosis in adults and children ages 2 years and older.

The typical dosage of Gastrocrom for adolescents ages 13 years and older is the same as the dosage for adults. This dosage is two containers (200 mg) stirred in water, four times per day. See the “Dosage for mastocytosis” section above for more information.

The typical dosage of Gastrocrom for children ages 2 to 12 years is one container (100 mg), four times per day. The drug should typically be taken at least 30 minutes before meals and at bedtime.

What if I miss a dose?

It’s important that you don’t miss a dose of Gastrocrom. A missed dose can make the drug less effective at treating your condition.

If you miss a dose of Gastrocrom, take your missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it’s almost time for your next dose, just skip your missed dose. Then you can take your next dose at its usual time. If you aren’t sure whether to take your missed dose or skip it, talk with your doctor or pharmacist.

You shouldn’t take an extra dose of Gastrocrom to make up for a missed dose. Doing this can increase your risk for side effects.

To help make sure you don’t miss a dose, try using a medication reminder. This can include setting an alarm or timer on your phone, or downloading a reminder app. A kitchen timer can work, too.

Will I need to use this drug long term?

Yes, Gastrocrom is generally meant to be used as a long-term treatment. The drug can be effective for reducing mastocytosis symptoms for as long as you continue taking it.

However, once you stop taking Gastrocrom, symptoms are likely to return within a few weeks. So if you and your doctor determine that Gastrocrom is safe and effective for you, you’ll likely take it long term.

There aren’t any known interactions between Gastrocrom and alcohol.

However, drinking alcohol can trigger an episode of mastocytosis* symptoms. (Mastocytosis is the condition that Gastrocrom treats.) For this reason, drinking alcohol while taking Gastrocrom may make it hard to tell if the drug is working to treat your condition.

If you drink alcohol, talk with your doctor about the amount that’s safe for you to drink while taking Gastrocrom.

* Mastocytosis is a condition in which the body makes too many mast cells (a type of white blood cell). For more information about this condition, see the “Gastrocrom uses” section above.

There aren’t any known interactions between Gastrocrom and other medications, herbs, or supplements.

Drug interactions weren’t observed in clinical trials of Gastrocrom. However, just because there aren’t any known drug interactions with Gastrocrom doesn’t mean that interactions can’t happen.

For this reason, it’s important to talk with your doctor and pharmacist before taking Gastrocrom. Tell them about all prescription, over-the-counter, and other drugs you take. Also tell them about any vitamins, herbs, and supplements you use. Sharing this information can help you avoid potential interactions.

If you have questions about drug interactions that may affect you, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Gastrocrom and herbs and supplements

There aren’t any herbs or supplements that have been specifically reported to interact with Gastrocrom. However, you should still check with your doctor or pharmacist before using any of these products while taking Gastrocrom.

Gastrocrom and foods

It’s important to note that you should avoid eating food for at least 30 minutes after taking Gastrocrom. This is because taking Gastrocrom with food lowers the level of the drug in your body. And this can make the drug less effective.

Other drugs are available that can treat mastocytosis.* Some may be a better fit for you than others. If you’re interested in finding an alternative to Gastrocrom, talk with your doctor. They can tell you about other medications that may work well for you.

Note: Some of the drugs listed below are used off-label to treat these specific conditions. Off-label drug use means using a drug for a purpose other than what it’s been approved for by the FDA.

Examples of other drugs that may be used to treat mastocytosis include:

* Mastocytosis is a condition in which the body makes too many mast cells (a type of white blood cell). For more information about this condition, see the “Gastrocrom uses” section above.

You should take Gastrocrom according to your doctor’s or healthcare provider’s instructions.

Gastrocrom comes as a liquid that you swallow. The liquid is packaged in small plastic single-use containers. Before taking the drug, you’ll open the containers and squeeze the liquid into a glass of water. You’ll stir the drug into the water and then drink the mixture.

You shouldn’t mix Gastrocrom with food, juice, milk, soda, or any other drinks. Doing this might make the drug less effective for treating your condition.

When to take

You’ll likely take Gastrocrom four times per day. It’s typically taken at least 30 minutes before meals and at bedtime.

To help make sure that you don’t miss a dose, try using a medication reminder. This can include setting an alarm on your phone or downloading a reminder app. A kitchen timer can work, too.

Taking Gastrocrom with food

You should avoid eating for at least 30 minutes after taking Gastrocrom. This is because taking the drug with food lowers the level of Gastrocrom in your body, which may make it less effective.

Note: You should only take Gastrocrom with water. The drug shouldn’t be taken with food, juice, milk, soda, or any other drinks to help mask the drug’s taste. Doing this might make the drug less effective for treating your condition.

Gastrocrom is FDA-approved to treat mastocytosis. It can be used in adults and children ages 2 years and older.

Mastocytosis is a condition in which your body makes too many mast cells. A mast cell is a type of white blood cell. Mast cells contain chemicals such as histamine and leukotrienes. These chemicals play a role in your body’s immune system.

When mast cells are triggered, they release histamine and leukotrienes into your blood. High levels of these chemicals in your blood cause symptoms such as headache, diarrhea, and itching. (For more information about this condition, see the “Gastrocrom uses” section above.)

Gastrocrom belongs to a class of drugs called mast cell stabilizers. (A class of drugs is a group of drugs that work in a similar way). Gastrocrom works to prevent mast cells from releasing chemicals that cause mastocytosis symptoms.

How long does it take to work?

It may take about 2 weeks for Gastrocrom to start working and for your mastocytosis symptoms to be reduced.

It’s not known if Gastrocrom is safe to take during pregnancy. There haven’t been enough studies of the drug’s use during pregnancy. Animal studies of pregnant females given Gastrocrom haven’t shown any harm to offspring. But animal studies don’t always predict what will happen in humans.

Note: In some cases, mastocytosis can lead to miscarriage (loss of pregnancy). Mastocytosis, which is the condition Gastrocrom is used to treat, occurs when the body makes too many mast cells. Mast cells are a type of white blood cell. For more information about this condition, see the “Gastrocrom uses” section above.

If you’re pregnant or planning to become pregnant, talk with your doctor about the risks of using Gastrocrom.

It’s not known if Gastrocrom is safe to take during pregnancy. If you’re sexually active and you or your partner can become pregnant, talk with your doctor about your birth control needs while you’re using Gastrocrom.

For more information about taking Gastrocrom during pregnancy, see the “Gastrocrom and pregnancy” section above.

It’s not known if Gastrocrom can pass into human breast milk. If you’re breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed while using Gastrocrom, talk with your doctor. They can discuss the risks and benefits of breastfeeding while using this drug.

Here are answers to some frequently asked questions about Gastrocrom.

Does Gastrocrom cure mastocytosis?

No, Gastrocrom doesn’t cure mastocytosis. Mastocytosis is a condition in which the body makes too many mast cells (a type of white blood cell). There currently isn’t a known cure for this condition.

However, with treatment, mastocytosis can be controlled. In clinical studies, Gastrocrom was effective in treating mastocytosis. (For more information, see the “Gastrocrom uses” section above.)

If you have questions about what to expect with Gastrocrom treatment, talk with your doctor.

Is it safe for older people to take Gastrocrom?

Yes, Gastrocrom is thought to be as safe for older people as it is for younger people.

Clinical studies of Gastrocrom didn’t include enough adults ages 65 years and older to determine if there are any age-related differences in the drug’s safety. But no differences in the safety of the drug have been reported for older people since Gastrocrom became available to the public.

However, older people may have other health conditions that affect how their bodies respond to Gastrocrom. These conditions could increase the risk of side effects from the drug.

Because of this, it’s recommended that you start with a low dosage of Gastrocrom if you’re age 65 years or older. Your Gastrocrom dosage may be increased over time until the drug works well to treat your condition. (For more information on Gastrocrom dosing, see the “Gastrocrom dosage” section above.)

If you’re concerned about using Gastrocrom given your age, talk with your doctor about the risks and benefits of using this drug. Your doctor can determine if this is an appropriate drug to treat your mastocytosis.

Can you buy Gastrocrom over the counter?

No, you can’t buy Gastrocrom over the counter (OTC). Gastrocrom is a brand-name prescription drug. It contains the active drug cromolyn sodium. And it comes as a liquid that you mix with water and swallow.

However, a different form of cromolyn sodium is available OTC. This form of cromolyn sodium comes as a nasal spray. It’s usually available under the brand-name Nasalcrom. Nasalcrom is used to treat nasal allergies.

Nasalcrom shouldn’t be used to treat mastocytosis. Mastocytosis is a condition in which the body makes too many mast cells (a type of white blood cell). Nasalcrom isn’t effective for treating this condition.

If you have questions about the differences between Gastrocrom and Nasalcrom, talk with your doctor or pharmacist.

What does Gastrocrom taste like?

Gastrocrom may have a bitter aftertaste. Typically, you’ll mix the drug with water before you take it. You shouldn’t mix Gastrocrom with food, juice, milk, soda, or any other drinks to help mask the taste. Doing this might make the drug less effective for treating your condition.

If you’re concerned about the taste of Gastrocrom, talk with your doctor or pharmacist. They may suggest ways to help lessen the bitter taste of the drug.

Can I take Gastrocrom if I have kidney or liver damage?

Yes, if your doctor says it’s safe, you can take Gastrocrom if you have kidney or liver damage.

Your kidneys and liver help to break Gastrocrom down and remove it from your body. If your kidneys or liver aren’t working properly, this could cause high levels of Gastrocrom in your blood. And this could increase your risk for side effects from the drug.

For this reason, it’s important to tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems before starting Gastrocrom. If you do, they’ll likely prescribe a lower-than-usual dosage of Gastrocrom for you. (For more information about possible side effects, see the “Gastrocrom side effects” section above.)

If you’re concerned about the risks of using Gastrocrom while you have kidney or liver damage, talk with your doctor.

Before taking Gastrocrom, talk with your doctor about your health history. Gastrocrom may not be right for you if you have certain medical conditions or other factors affecting your health. These include:

  • Poor kidney function. If you have poor kidney function, be sure to tell your doctor before starting Gastrocrom. They’ll likely give you a lower-than-usual dosage of Gastrocrom to treat your mastocytosis.
  • Poor liver function. Before starting Gastrocrom, tell your doctor if you have poor liver function. They’ll likely give you a lower dosage of Gastrocrom treat your mastocytosis.
  • Allergic reaction. If you’ve had an allergic reaction to Gastrocrom or any of its ingredients, you shouldn’t take Gastrocrom. Ask your doctor what other medications are better options for you.
  • Pregnancy. It’s not known if Gastrocrom is safe to use during pregnancy. For more information, see the “Gastrocrom and pregnancy” section above.
  • Breastfeeding. It’s not known if Gastrocrom can pass into human breast milk. For more information, see the “Gastrocrom and breastfeeding” section above.

Note: For more information about the potential negative effects of Gastrocrom, see the “Gastrocrom side effects” section above.

Do not use more Gastrocrom than your doctor recommends. For some drugs, doing so may lead to unwanted side effects or overdose.

What to do in case you take too much Gastrocrom

If you think you’ve taken too much of this drug, call your doctor. You can also call the American Association of Poison Control Centers at 800-222-1222 or use their online tool. But if your symptoms are severe, call 911 or your local emergency number, or go to the nearest emergency room right away.

When you get Gastrocrom from the pharmacy, the pharmacist will add an expiration date to the label on the bottle. This date is typically 1 year from the date they dispensed the medication.

The expiration date helps guarantee that the medication is effective during this time. The current stance of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is to avoid using expired medications. If you have unused medication that has gone past the expiration date, talk with your pharmacist about whether you might still be able to use it.

Storage

How long a medication remains good can depend on many factors, including how and where you store the medication.

Gastrocrom should be stored at a room temperature of 59°F to 86°F (15°C to 30°C). The drug should be kept away from light and stored in its foil pouch until it’s time to take it. Avoid storing this medication in areas where it could get damp or wet, such as bathrooms.

Disposal

If you no longer need to take Gastrocrom and have leftover medication, it’s important to dispose of it safely. This helps prevent others, including children and pets, from taking the drug by accident. It also helps keep the drug from harming the environment.

This article provides several useful tips on medication disposal. You can also ask your pharmacist for information about how to dispose of your medication.
