Abrosexuality refers to an individual whose sexuality is fluid and fluctuates between different sexualities. This can include changes in both sexual and romantic orientation.

Sexuality refers to whom a person does or does not experience attraction toward. This attraction is typically sexual or romantic. Many different sexual orientations exist on a spectrum. People can identify with one or more orientations and may also find their sexuality changes.

With abrosexuality, a person can identify with various sexualities over different periods. This means the group they experience either romantic or sexual attraction to can change from one timeframe to the next. An abrosexual person’s sexuality may change frequently over the course of hours, days, months, or years. Abrosexuality is also unique to each individual.

This article discusses abrosexuality, including spectrums, and how it compares to other terminology.

The term abrosexual is a type of sexual orientation that describes the rapidly changing or fluid nature of their sexuality. It refers to an individual who experiences fluctuation in their orientation, which can change frequently over the course of hours, days, months, or years.

The term likely derives from the Greek word “abro”, which means delicate or graceful. This can symbolize the movement and fluctuating nature of a person’s sexual orientation.

Sexual attraction usually describes a person’s desire to have sex with other people, while romantic attraction typically refers to a person’s expression of love within a relationship. While abrosexuality typically includes both sexual and romantic orientation, some may use the term abroromantic to specifically describe fluctuations in their romantic attraction.

Some people may also confuse the term with asexuality. While a person who identifies as abrosexual may experience asexuality, their orientation can quickly change to another sexuality that may have a larger emphasis on romantic and sexual attraction.

The term abrosexuality falls under the multisexuality umbrella. This is a term to describe attraction to more than one gender. In addition to abrosexuality, it includes other sexual attractions such as bisexuality, polysexuality, omnisexuality, and others.

Sexual identity differs from gender identity. While sexuality refers to attraction, gender identity refers to the personal sense of an individual’s own gender. A person’s sex and gender identity do not have to be the same.

While definitions for identities are available, people do not need to use them if they do not want to.

There are different spectrums of sexuality that can include:

  • romantic attraction
  • sexual attraction
  • sexual orientation

These spectrums enable people who do not feel as if they can relate to an identity to find communities of people who share similar experiences. This offers a sense of belonging for people who may wish to fit into a category.

Aceflux and Aroflux are terms that refer specifically to spectrums. Aceflux is a spectrum of sexuality, ranging from people with negative to positive sexual inclination. Aroflux describes the range from negative to positive feelings toward romance. People can vary along each spectrum during their lifetimes.

Abrosexuality describes a fluctuating sexuality. However, sexually fluid people may identify with many other orientations. This can include:

  • Asexuality: This refers to a spectrum that can describe various ways a person may identify. While many asexual people may have little interest in having sex, they may experience romantic attraction, while others may not.
  • Bisexuality: The exact definition may vary among individuals, but it typically refers to those that feel an attraction to more than one gender
  • Pansexuality: This term usually describes an individual who can feel an attraction to anyone. Pansexual people may describe their attraction as focusing on personality rather than gender.
  • Queer: Previously a derogatory term, people in the LGBTQIA+ community reclaimed the term, which can refer to individuals who regard their sexual orientation, gender identity, or both, as fluid.

While abrosexuality refers to sexual fluidity, it is different from gender fluidity. This refers to a person whose gender identification and presentation may shift between two or more genders. While different, they both enable self-expression and can change from an hourly to yearly basis.

The ability to identify as a type of sexuality creates an openness that can help people understand their identity. Understanding the full range of concepts of orientation can be challenging and may involve a transition across different parts of the spectrum. A person can identify with whatever orientation they believe fits.

Abrosexual offers a label for those who would like one, as it describes a fluctuating identity that did not previously have a definition. However, some people may prefer not to use such sexual markers. This may be because they are still in the process of establishing their sexual identity or simply because they feel that they do not need a label or want to conform to certain ideals.

Abrosexuality can make it difficult to sustain a long-term relationship as sense of attraction changes. Additionally, abrosexual individuals may find they experience romantic attraction to a person, but not sexual attraction, and vice versa. As such, some abrosexual people may not seek out a relationship or may prefer a wavership due to the variability of their attraction to others.

A wavership describes a form of relationship where the exact type of relationship can change. For example, one day, the relationship may be romantic, the next queerplatonic, and another type of bond the following day. The key idea is that there is some form of constant between those in the relationship.

Many people who identify as abrosexual can maintain committed relationships, as their desire to be with a person outweighs the potential fluctuating loss of sexual or romantic attraction toward them.

Support for individuals who are abrosexual is available through various organizations. Some groups and clinics that people can turn to for support include:

Abrosexuality refers to a fluid sexual orientation. Sexuality typically refers to feelings of romantic and sexual attraction. For abrosexual individuals, this can mean that their sexual orientation frequently changes to reflect different types and intensities of attraction. Abrosexuality is unique for each person and could change daily, weekly, monthly, or per year.

Many different types of sexuality exist, and people may consider using a term such as abrosexual to label their sexual orientation. This can be useful for those seeking a community of people with a similar orientation. However, people do not need to use or conform to the idea of labels if they do not wish to.
