The menopause is caused by a change in the balance of the body's sex hormones and signals the end of menstruation - the ovaries stop producing an egg every 4 weeks. The reduction in estrogen causes symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings and vaginal dryness. Simple diet and lifestyle changes can relieve symptoms, and some women are treated with hormone replacement therapy (HRT).
