Tokyo (JCNN) - Meiji Seika Kaisha (TSE: 2202) has announced that it will make a presentation of its latest research on rosmarinic acid at the 1st Symposium of the Japanese Society for Food Immunology to be held on February 26. Specifically, the company will report the curative properties of rosmarinic acid against hay fever.

Rosmarinic acid is a plant polyphenol derived from red perilla. According to a double-blinded clinical trial co-conducted by the company and the Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine, about 70% of the subjects who took rosmarinic acid tablets (200 mg) regularly felt that their hay fever symptoms such as sneeze, snivel and nasal congestion were alleviated.

In accordance with the symptomatic improvement, the increase of inflammatory cells in nasal discharges was effectively inhibited. They have also confirmed that the same effectiveness with 50 mg tablets.

Meiji Seika Kaisha expects that this discovery will greatly contribute to the development of health foods for hay fever.
