Karen Newell, Asthma UK Adviceline nurse, says: 'Asthma symptoms can worsen in summer due to higher levels of pollen and pollution. In light of the MET office forecast for this summer, Asthma UK advises that people with asthma take preventative measures now by ensuring that their inhalers are in date and that they have a personal asthma action plan.

'Asthma UK also recommends that people with asthma avoid going out in the middle of the afternoon, especially if air quality is poor. Pollution levels tend to be higher in the summer and 66% of people with asthma tell us that traffic pollution triggers their condition.

'It may be helpful to keep a regular check on air quality levels in the local area, so it is possible to make changes to plans for the following day if pollution levels are high.

'Asthma UK recommends that people with asthma always carry their reliever inhaler with them in case they come into contact with an asthma trigger. Anyone who is concerned about their asthma should contact their doctor or asthma nurse, or call the Asthma UK Adviceline on 08457 01 02 03.'
