Bioterrorism is an attack using a deliberate release of agents such as viruses, bacteria and other germs as a weapon to cause illness or death in people, animals or plants. Although the lethal agents can be found in nature, they can be altered to increase their ability to cause disease, make them drug resistant or increase their ability to spread. Biological agents can be spread through the air, water or in food. Terrorists may use biological agents because they are difficult to detect and do not cause illness for several hours to several days.
