Water fluoridation has been rated by the Centre for Disease Control as one of the Top 10 Public Health Achievements of the 20th century. Yass was the first town in New South Wales (NSW) to be fluoridated, in1956, and by the late 1980s, approximately 90 percent of the population had access to fluoridated water. In New South Wales (NSW) -- in contrast to metropolitan Sydney, where 100 percent of the population has access to fluoridated water -- only 59 percent of the population living outside Sydney has access to fluoridated water. Under the Fluoridation of Public Water Supplies Act 1957, the responsibility to implement fluoridation rests with local government authorities who manage water supplies. Adoption in currently non-fluoridated communities is hindered due to organized community opposition to water fluoridation. However, since 2003, NSW Health has developed a well-coordinated, strategic, multidisciplinary approach to water fluoridation, to tackle the determinants of health and to reduce the growing inequalities in oral health. In partnership with the Area Health Services, the Australian Dental Association, and Local Governments, these strategies have resulted in two Councils (Deniliquin and Moree) implementing fluoridation and 13 more Councils progressing toward implementation in NSW. By 2007, approximately a quarter million more rural NSW (another 3 percent of the NSW) residents will have access to fluoridated water. Another 7 Councils, with a population of 272, 212, are currently being actively targeted.

The innovative strategies used to mobilize communities include the role of partnerships and communications, community consultation, and participation and principles of social marketing. The fluoridation promotion strategies used in NSW are currently being evaluated by the Centre for Health Services Research, University of Sydney, and would be a useful resource document for future fluoridation projects in other rural areas in NSW, Australia, and internationally. Preliminary findings from this evaluation will be presented today at the 84th General Session of the International Association for Dental Research. Councillors were more likely to support water fluoridation if they were made aware of the poorer oral health in their community, if water fluoridation was framed as a public health issue, if there was strong and united support for fluoridation by the health professionals, and following the paths of most Councils in NSW.

This is a summary of abstract #1193, "Reasons Councillors Voted For or Against Water Fluoridation," by L.T.T. Trinh, S. Sivaneswaran, G. Rubin, and M. Piza (University of Sydney, Sydney West Areas Health Services, New South Wales Health, Australia), presented on Thursday, June 29, 2006,at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre, during the 84th General Session of the International Association for Dental Research.

Poison in our water

posted by Steven Klaunzer on 26 Apr 2012 at 12:36 am

Putting fluoride in our water for dental hygiene is a lie plain and simple, because the water goes strait past our teeth and strait into our stomach and in our bloodstream,

If the government cared so much about dental hygiene why not give out free toothpaste and brushes.

FLOURIDE deception

I want the choice if i want this POISON to medicate me!
As far as i am concern i stay away from this RAT POISON.

ANY chemical substance used to prevent or cure disease such as dental caries is a medicine by definition.
All medicines prescribed by doctors have a specific dosage based on the nature of the problem, age, gender, existing medical conditions, treatment and consent of the patient.

MASS MEDICATION OF FLUORIDE IS A VIOLATION OF OUR CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS.

Water fluoridation is forced mass medication with an uncontrolled dose. Where intake is not controlled as for fluoride in drinking water, there needs to be a greater margin of safety between "optimal" and toxic levels. Fluoride is classified as a Schedule 7 poison - no such safety margin exists.

1) I heard fluoride is a poison. Is this true?
Yes. Fluoride is an acute toxin with a rating higher than that of lead. According to "Clinical Toxicology of Commercial products," 5th Edition, 1984, lead is given a toxicity rating of 3 to 4, and Fluoride is rated at 4 (3 = moderately toxic, 4 = very toxic). On December 7, 1992, the new EPA Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) for lead was set at 0.015 ppm, with a goal of 0.0ppm. The MCL for fluoride is currently set for 4.0 ppm - that's over 250 times the permissible level of lead.

Fluoride used in water fluoridation is also a toxic waste product -- which means it contains other heavy metals. It is the most bone seeking element known to mankind. The US Public Health Service has stated that fluoride makes the bones more brittle and dental enamel more porous.

I’ve inquired with Sydney Water and they told me that they are using Fluoride in form of hydrofluorosilicic acid.

Nothing natural.

Mass Medication vote NO

Mass Medication is the worst thing anyone can do the public needs to know what they are ingesting and probably a source for many diseases or condition that are plagueing australia today.

No deficiency stgate is known fron lack of fluoride it is NOT a Nutrient.

Scientists and health professionals in many counties oppose water fluoridation because of its toxicity.

Fluoride is not reecommended for anyone with kidney failure, in pregnancy or breast feeding.

Would you doctor prescribe a medication for-
an unseen patient, Medica history unknown, dose controlled only by thirst, with no right of refusal
for a lifetime.

Maybe everone should go to fluoridealert.org for more information.

Benefit to your nutritional health

posted by Dana on 19 Sep 2011 at 6:23 pm

It is not the 'top' public health acheivement of the 20th century but it is a fantastic achievement that provides a protective factor to dental caries. i agree heavier promotion of healthy eating and drinking needs to be alongside this though to achieve any significant reduction in caries rates.

Its not a poison, its a naturally occuring substance that is necessary for healthy strong teeth, and if its a deficit in the diet it significantly reduces the health of your mouth! As people in a population are in deficit of many important vitamins and minerals this is a great public health achievement to at least aid the reduction of one health problem that is burdening our health system

NUREMBERG CODE "The voluntary consent of the human subject is absolutely essential."

It is MY choice whether I want this poison in my water - not YOURS. It is MINE. You are forcing this poison into me, my only other option is to die of thirst. This a a breach of my rights. It is MY decision. Not yours.

One of the "top 10 Public Health Achievements of the 20th century"? Who are you kidding? In over 50 years the sole Australian dental care solution has been fluoridation and the medical profession is happy with that! What about fighting for a properly funded dental care system equivalent to Medicare at least for the over half a million of Australians that can't afford to see a dentist?

What about putting pressure on the food industry to reduce the amount of sugar added to food and asking for a control on junk food commercial, supplying school with proper canteen selling proper food to kids. What I get from this propaganda is that it does not matter how many cans of soft drinks a kid has in a day as long as at the end of it he or she has a glass of fluoridated water.

This is an absolute shame that the medical profession can be satisfied with such a simplistic and futile solution. One only needs to have in mind the early 2007 arrival of Thai Buddhist dentists who felt compelled to perform charity dental care to Australians to realize that fluoridation is as effective as a band-aid on a wooden leg. At least the band-aid is not poisonous!
