Rybelsus (semaglutide) is a brand-name tablet that you swallow. The drug comes in a special bottle that’s designed to protect your tablets. There are tips you can follow to open the bottle and take your medication correctly.
Rybelsus is used to improve blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes. This article discusses how to open your Rybelsus bottle and how to take the drug correctly.

Rybelsus tablets come in a child-resistant bottle with a blue cap. The bottle is designed to prevent children from accessing the drug. Be sure to keep the bottle out of reach of children.
The bottle is also designed to keep the drug from being exposed to moisture. Moisture can reduce how well Rybelsus works, so it’s important to keep your Rybelsus tablets in the original bottle with the blue cap on until you’re ready to take it. Do not use a pill organizer or another container to store your Rybelsus tablets.
Rybelsus should be stored in a dry place at 68ºF to 77ºF (20ºC to 25ºC).
Below are steps to help you open your bottle of Rybelsus:
- Put your Rybelsus bottle on a flat surface. This will allow you to get a good, even grip on the bottle.
- Push down on the blue cap and turn it counterclockwise, in the direction of the arrow.
- You should now be able to open the bottle.
- Take a tablet for your dose.
- Right after you take your tablet, place the blue cap back on the bottle to close it.
If you need help opening your Rybelsus bottle, talk with your doctor or pharmacist for additional tips. Your pharmacist may be able to recommend tools to make it easier to open bottles.
The drug manufacturer also provides free, live, one-on-one support from a Diabetes Health Coach. This person can answer questions about Rybelsus and help you manage your diabetes. For more details, see the program website or call 833-ASK-A-CDE (833-275-2233).
It’s important to take your Rybelsus doses the same way every day, according to your doctor’s instructions. The drug is usually taken once per day.
Typically, you’ll take Rybelsus on an empty stomach when you wake up in the morning. You’ll swallow the tablet whole with no more than 4 ounces (1/2 cup) of water. Do not cut, crush, or chew the tablet.
It might be helpful to keep plain water near your bed so you can take the drug as soon as you wake up for the day.
After you take the drug, be sure to wait 30 minutes before consuming any food, beverages, or other oral medications or supplements. This will give your body time to absorb Rybelsus. Eating, drinking, or taking other oral substances can decrease your body’s absorption of the drug. Waiting more than 30 minutes may help your body better absorb the medication.
