After 3 years of debate the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has decided to approve sales of a "morning-after" contraceptive pill without a prescription. Plan B, manufactured by Barr Pharmaceuticals Inc, can be sold to over 18s in the United States without a prescription, but must remain off pharmacy shelves to prevent those aged under 18 from obtaining the drug without doctors orders. 17 year olds and under will still need to have a prescription to buy Plan B.

Plan B will be available only in pharmacies and the FDA has ruled that women or men must show ID proving they are over 18 to purchase the drug - this decision has disappointed some parties who had hoped for wider access saying that the drug could halve the number of unplanned pregnancies in the United States. There are estimated to be up to 3 million unplanned pregnancies annually in the US, of which 850,000 occur in teenagers.

Some Conservative groups are also upset by the decision, arguing that making Plan B available "over-the-counter" could increase promiscuity and think that the use of Plan B is equivalent to abortion.

The FDA said that Plan B, available on prescription in the US since 1999, was safe and affective for women when taken as directed, but should not be used routinely. Studies show that Plan B can reduce the risk of pregnancy occurring by up to 89% if taken within 72 hours of sex and is most effective if taken within 24 hours.

Plan B is, in effect, a concentrated version of existing contraceptive pills that contains higher doses of progestin. Women are directed to take 2 pills 12 hours apart which block the release or prevent fertilization of an egg. Potential side effects are similar to those experienced by some women when using regular birth-control pills and include nausea, stomach pain, headaches, dizziness or breast tenderness. The pills currently cost between $25 and $40 on prescription, Barr Pharmaceuticals Inc. have not indicated they will change this cost and say that they hope to begin over-the-counter sales later this year.

Seriously

posted by Elizabeth on 1 Apr 2007 at 8:50 pm

I do not know enough about the mechanism of action of this drug to comment on whether I think it is right or wrong, but I found myself embarrassed after reading such hateful "Christian" comments.

Certainly there is a place for right and wrong, but I thought Jesus taught about speaking the truth in love - all I hear from this discussion board is some Christians hungry to pronounce judgment on everyone else.

I'd just like to attempt to redeem the name of Christianity a bit by reminding folks that there is a God who is in love with ALL of the people who make up this world, and whether Plan B is a sin or not is no excuse to paint a distorted view of God with hateful words.

I Would Never Go To A Priest For Advice on Sex

posted by Barbara Santori on 1 Oct 2006 at 10:05 am

I would never go to a priest for advice on sex. I would only ever consider it the day no case of priests sexually abusing children appears for at least one decade.

Going to a man of the cloth for advice on sex is like asking the wolf to help you look after your lambs.

Wrong When Used As Birth Control

posted by Anon on 1 Oct 2006 at 12:03 am

I take daily birth control pills and I go to church weekly. God is forgiving and will understand.
I take birth control pills for a medical reason and I also take a bunch of other medication that causes my birth control to be less effective. Six months ago I was raped and I'll be damned if I get pregnant from such a traumatizing experience. I took the plan b and called my priest and talked to him about it. My priest told me that the catholic church frowns upon it - however given my circumstances it was perfectly acceptable. I disagree when it comes to you promiscuos women who use it as a regular birth control regimen. In that case abstinence is better. As far as 14 year old girls being allowed to get plan b I have mixed feelings. I dont want to see kids raising kids, sucking up the wellfare. I think a parent should have to be present with a minor to purchase the plan b.

If these comments are examples of American people, and the USA is trying to sort out the world - HEAVEN HELP US!!. Religious fanatics seem to thrive in the USA, as well as other parts of the world.

These fanatics fan their bigotry, shoot their bullets - and the rest of the world get caught in the crossfire.

Plan B And The Consequences

posted by Tony Blackwoord on 20 Sep 2006 at 10:20 am

Plan B is a drug for people who have had sex and are afraid they might get pregnant. The solution - only have sex when you want to get pregnant.

Whoever thought of doing something and then killing a child because they made a mistake.

Plan B is for fornicators and child killers. It says clearly in the bible that fornicators will go to eternal damnation.

In America we live in God's land. Satan is a foreigner - he should not be allowed into America. God Bless America.

You Are Going To Hell

posted by lauren on 20 Sep 2006 at 8:15 am

You are a horrible person and probably worship George W. Bush. I bet you didn't have sex until you were 35 years old and I'm sure you have a very unhappy life.

I bet you are fat and ugly and the only thing keeping you going in life is the sheer glimmer of hope you may get into heaven which you will not make it in b/c you are a judgemental waste of a human life.

I'm sure you just want more abortions and more babies coming from teenagers who are not ready going into this world and having a terrible life.

The morning after pill is a GOD SEND - yes you heard me, and you are immoral for saying its for sinners. you are the sinner. you should be banned to the eternal depths of hell for being such a close minded waste of a person.

Plan B Is For Sinners

posted by Linda Moorhaven on 13 Sep 2006 at 10:51 am

Whoever takes Plan B will have to face God one day. It clearly states in the bible that you should not do anything to stop conception from taking place.

This is a sin. The punishment will be eternal existence with Satan and his hellish environment.
