A new US study estimates that about 30 per cent of Americans report having an alcohol disorder at some time in their lives. Over half (17.8 per cent) are due to alcohol abuse and the rest to alcohol dependence (12.5 per cent).
The study is published in the July issue of Archives of General Psychiatry, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.
Alcohol abuse and dependence often have serious consequences like car crashes, domestic violence and birth defects. They also have a negative impact on the economy and cause enormous distress and impairment said the researchers who are from Columbia University in New York, New York State Psychiatric Institute, and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.
Dr Deborah Hasin, from the Columbia University Medical Center and her colleagues analyzed data from face to face interviews with a representative cross section of the American population that took place with over 43,000 adults in 2001 and 2002.
The interviewers sought symptoms of alcohol abuse and dependence as defined in the Fourth Edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV), a "gold standard" used by psychiatrists and psychologists.
A diagnosis of alcohol abuse required one or more of the alcohol abuse criteria to be present and alcohol dependence required three or more of the seven criteria for dependence given in the manual.
Diagnoses of other mental and psychiatric disorders were also conducted, such as for depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, abuse and dependence on other substances.
The results showed that:
- 8.5 per cent of adults had an alcohol use disorder in the 12 months up to the survey.
- This included 4.7 per cent with alcohol abuse and 3.8 per cent with alcohol dependence.
- Alcohol dependence was more common among men, whites, Native Americans, younger unmarried adults and those on lower incomes.
- Current alcohol abuse was more common among men, whites, and younger unmarried adults.
- But lifetime rates of abuse were highest among middle aged Americans.
- Alcohol abuse developed at an average age of 22.5, while alcohol dependence developed at an average age of 21.9.
- Alcohol dependence was linked with disability and the levels of disability progressed steadily higher with increasing severity of dependence.
- Of those who had alcohol dependence at some point in their lives, ony 24.1 per cent had ever been treated.
- Of those who had alcohol dependence during the previous 12 months, only 12.1 per cent had been treated during the same period.
- On average, patients received treatment 8 years after the age at which they developed the condition.
- Treatment rates were slightly lower than those found 10 years earlier.
"On average, respondents with alcohol dependence manifested less disability than those with drug dependence and anxiety disorders, but their disability was comparable with that among respondents who had drug abuse, mood and personality disorders."
They also found that alcohol abuse and dependence were linked quite significantly to use of other substances and their associated disorders but the link became weaker when they controlled for other conditions:
"Significant associations between mood, anxiety and personality disorders and alcohol dependence were reduced in number and magnitude when controlling for other comorbidity," the researchers said.
This suggests that there is a unique underlying factor that links alcohol and other substance abuse disorders but the link between alcohol abuse or dependence and disorders such as personality, anxiety and mood disorders might be due to factors in common between the alcohol problems and these psychiatric disorders.
The authors concluded that:
"Alcohol abuse and dependence remain highly prevalent and disabling."
"Persistent low treatment rates given the availability of effective treatments indicate the need for vigorous education efforts for the public and professionals," they added.

NIFAR Recovery For Alchohol
posted by Anne on 10 Oct 2008 at 7:31 amI ordered NIFAR'S programme for recovery for my son. They are suppose to allow you 30 days Free TRial. It arrived 15 days into the 30 days, and my son had no time to finish it in 15days. I had to return it overnight, and it cost me $80.00 for this, and now I have been charged $159.95 on my credit card. Be careful if you order this, and make sure you get it back to them within the 30 days. It is something you need to think about before ordering. Make sure you have time to listen to 24 CD's for a start!! Beware what you get charged for.
Psychologist Addiction Counselor
posted by John Peter Ph.D. on 22 Oct 2008 at 6:57 amI am an addiction counselor in practice for the past 27 years and recently purchased eleven of the nifar’s program for my patients. I did return two of them for various unrelated reasons.
During the return nifar’s staff were courteous and very professional. I have found their return policy to be simple and clear.
They do offer a free trial period but it starts from the date of shipment. The trial period did provide sufficient time for my patients to scan and evaluate the program in order to see if they can commit to it.
Perhaps the writer of the comment was late in returning the program and this is why she encountered difficulties. My experience with them although not long term has been pleasant and helpful. Overall my experience with NIFAR’s program has been positive.
Return Policy Is Not As Clear Cut As You Might Think
posted by Anon on 1 Jun 2009 at 2:12 pmI ordered the Regenerate program for a family member. At 30 days, it was clear that he was unwilling to commit to the program.
When I tried to call for a return authorization number, I was greeted with a series of recorded messages that "all circuits are busy at this time." I am now past the deadline, and still unable to get through. I found the website, and have tried to send the company an e-mail, but this is starting to feel like a scam!
Return Problems
posted by Vince Clark on 3 Jul 2009 at 2:31 amThe company should not start the trial until the item is received. Especially knowing just how efficient the USPS is. Also, it would avoid negative opinions that I am sure has caused some to avoid even trying the program.
NIFAR program
posted by Hoyt Candell on 20 Aug 2009 at 4:04 pmI did order nifar program and it did help me with my drinking. I have been drinking for 32 years and this is the first time I am sober. I have not had a drink for 4 month and I feel renewed. May be nifar has a lousy customer service I don't know, but they are not scam and they did help me and I am grateful.
Excellent Service
posted by lc on 22 Apr 2010 at 9:47 pmI ordered the trial for my husband and we listened to half of the tapes together and I continued to listen to the other half. They helped me a great deal and I gained a better understanding of the disease of alcoholism (great information). My husband was not committed, at the time, so I called to return them a few days before the 30 days.
They allowed me to purchase the program for 1 payment of 159.00 if I kept the program. I decided to keep the program and my husband has since started to relisten to the tapes and they also have helped another family member. I never had any trouble getting through to the company and was very pleased with their service.
Regenerate Tapes/program
posted by joel bingham on 24 Jan 2011 at 10:07 amThank god for these tapes. I ordered tapes in April 2009. You really have to want to do this program and become free of the bondadge that alcohol has on you. With this program and my desire to quit drinking, I have been clean and sober for 19 months. I've listened to these tapes again on several occasions when I've had low moments and they have really helped me focus on my recovery. I drank for over thirty-five years before these tapes came into my life. Would I recommend these? Absolultely!!!
