There are more than 200 types of virus that can cause the common cold. Those viruses most responsible for cold usually belong to either rhinoviruses or coronaviruses. Flu is not the same as the common cold; it is caused by a different set of viruses. The symptoms of cold and flu are similar. However, flu symptoms are usually more severe than cold symptoms and come on quicker, and a common cold rarely has symptoms of fever above 101 degrees.
