A food allergy is a rapid and potentially serious response to food by the immune system that triggers symptoms such as a rash, wheezing and itching. Food intolerance is more common than food allergies and triggers symptoms at a slower rate such as bloating and stomach cramps. Food intolerance can be difficult to distinguish from other digestive disorders such as inflammatory bowel disease, gastrointestinal obstructions or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
